Chapter 1286: The Long Night
The ER lights flickered off, and Aidan's intense stare finally lifted from Lily, letting her breathe easy for the first time in what felt like forever.
Trailing behind Aidan, she listened as he grilled the doc about Niall's condition.
"He's not in immediate danger, but the next 24 hours are crucial," the doc said.
Aidan gave a nod and watched as the nurse wheeled Niall into the ICU.
They couldn't go in, so they had to hang out in the waiting area. Neither of them was budging.
Feeling guilty, Lily piped up, "Aidan, you should go get some rest. I'll stay here and keep an eye on things."
She was worried Aidan was running on fumes, but he just scoffed. "Niall's my brother; I'm not going anywhere."
Basically, until Lily and Niall tied the knot, she was still an outsider.
Lily went quiet.
She had no clue what to say next.
The vibe got super heavy. They sat on benches far apart, like total strangers.
That night was gonna be a long one.
The next morning, Evelyn was up early, packing her stuff. Dermot had already given Henry the heads-up, so by the time she got downstairs, Henry was in the loop.
"Don't worry, Evelyn. God's got Niall," Henry reassured her.
Evelyn forced a smile. "I'm fine, Grandpa. Really."
She was worried sick but keeping it together.
After breakfast with Henry, Evelyn and Dermot headed out. They had the earliest flight booked, so they bounced right after eating.
Before boarding, Evelyn called Aidan for an update.
Aidan said Niall was stable. Evelyn had to wait until she got to Golombia to see for herself.
After hanging up, Evelyn and Dermot boarded the plane, which quickly took off and disappeared into the skies above Moris City.
At Golombia Hospital, Aidan put his phone away and looked at Niall, who had made it through the critical 24 hours but was still in the ICU, and sighed.
Lily hadn't left. She'd freshened up in the restroom and was back at the ICU entrance.
"You don't need to stay here. Go home," Aidan said, which was rare for him, but he wanted her gone.
Lily shook her head. "No, I'm not tired. I want to be here when he wakes up."
She felt awful for Niall. If she couldn't even stay and wait, she didn't deserve to be his girlfriend.
"Niall cares about you. If you wear yourself out, he'll worry when he wakes up," Aidan said.
Lily pressed her lips together, wanting to argue, but Aidan cut her off, "Someone will be here to keep watch. I need to rest. I'll be back by noon."
By noon, Evelyn and the others would probably be there, and they could figure out the next steps.
Even if Lily didn't want to leave, she couldn't argue with that.
Aidan made it clear he didn't want her there. Reluctantly, she left.
But she didn't go far. She got a room at a hotel across the street. After a quick wash, she lay down on the bed.
She stayed awake, anxiously watching the clock, counting down to noon when she could finally head back to the hospital.
