Chapter 23
Cassie noticed Dermot's change and felt very uneasy.
Ignoring Dermot and Cassie, Evelyn whispered to Aidan, "I don't know when the lot I sponsored will come out."
She wondered how much her item was worth.
"We have to wait a little longer. Mr. Smith's work hasn't been on the market for years, so your painting must be the finale," Aidan replied.
Then he shook his head helplessly, asking, "You sure you could just donate Mr. Smith's painting like this?"
"He's my master. He'll take it easy on me!" Evelyn curled her lips indifferently. "Besides, he's already given me the painting, so I can do whatever I want to it."
"Right. You're his disciple. Sure, he won't blame you."
"Of course. He loves me very much."
The two spoke in a low voice, and Dermot, sitting by the side, didn't hear what they were saying. He could only see them talking and laughing. This inevitably made him angry.
As a man, Dermot could tell from Aidan's eyes that he didn't just wanna be Evelyn's brother.
Soon, the auction began, and everyone quieted down.
The first lot was a diamond necklace sponsored by a businessman. He stood up and waved to everyone when the host mentioned his name.
When Aidan asked Evelyn if she was interested, she shook her head. She had never been interested in diamonds.
However, Cassie was. Her eyes lit up when she saw such a big diamond.
"Do you like it?" Dermot asked Cassie.
"Yeah." Cassie nodded. But then, she hurriedly said, "But I don't want it."
That was a bit hypocritical. If she didn't want it, why did she tell Dermot she liked it?
Dermot won the bid and, unsurprisingly, snapped the diamond he gave to Cassie without even looking at it. This made many people at the scene guess the real relationship between the two.
They didn't believe Cassie was just Dermot's sister.
The auction continued. Evelyn got bored and sleepy because she was not interested in the following stuff.
"The next lot is a pair of imperial green earrings, with a starting bid of 800 thousand."
Soon after the host's voice fell, someone bid for the auction. Obviously, many people liked these earrings.
Evelyn's eyes lit up with interest when she saw the earrings as she also liked them.
Sensing the excitement in her eyes, Aidan immediately raised his sign. "1.5 million!"
"Aidan..." Evelyn looked at him.
"You like it, and I'll get it. I have nothing else but money." Since the auction started, Evelyn had finally found something she liked. Aidan thought he must get it for her.
Hearing this, Evelyn smiled and didn't refuse. "Thank you, Aidan."
The price of 1.5 million put a lot of people off. The earrings were precious, but they weren't worth the high price.
"1.5 million going once!"
"1.5 million going twice!"
"1.5 million going..."
"3 million!"
Dermot raised the price. Everyone was surprised as they didn't expect Dermot and Aidan to bid for the same item.
Evelyn looked at Dermot next to her, frowning slightly and thinking, 'Does he wanna fight against me? Or does Cassie like these earrings too?'
"Mr. Doyle, the game is on, huh?" Aidan smiled faintly, knowing that Dermot was deliberately against him.
"Whoever offers the highest price wins. Mr. Brooks, you should be clear about this rule." Dermot implied that if Aidan had money, he could compete with him.
Aidan snorted lightly and held up the bidding card. "5 million!"
"6 million," Dermot said in a calm voice.
"8 million!"
"10 million."
Aidan wanted to raise his card again, but Evelyn stopped him. "Forget it, Aidan. Those earrings aren't worth it."
She thought to herself, 'Only a fool would buy it with 10 million.'
Obviously, Evelyn didn't want Aidan to be a fool. As for Dermot, she didn't care.
