Chapter 390 Let's Break Up

Dermot's already furrowed brows twisted tighter, resembling a tightly knotted rope. He couldn't believe what he was seeing as he looked at Evelyn. "You've seen the photo?"

Evelyn didn't deny, there was nothing to deny, it was the truth.

"You went through my study?" He had placed that photo in his study, but it wasn't in an obvious place. Evelyn wouldn't have been able to see it if she hadn't deliberately searched.

Seeing his anger, Evelyn wasn't afraid; she even found it somewhat amusing. "I did go through it."

She wanted to see how Dermot would react.

The man was furious, tempted to hit someone, but not Evelyn, it was himself he wanted to hit.

Taking a deep breath, it took him a while to calm down. "Evey, things aren't as you think, Ava and I don't actually have any connection."

"What kind of connection is that? Can you guarantee that your initial interest in me wasn't because I resembled her?" Evelyn stared directly at him, not giving Dermot any chance to lie.

Dermot fell silent.

He couldn't guarantee it because when he first met Evelyn, he was indeed drawn to her because of her resemblance to Ava. But later on, Dermot's liking for her had nothing to do with Ava.

Evelyn was unaware of all this, she only saw Dermot's silence. To her, his silence meant consent. In this moment, Evelyn's heart shattered as tears welled up in her eyes. "Fine, that's just great!" she said, her voice trembling. She had never imagined that one day she, Evelyn, would become someone's substitute.

"Evey..." Dermot saw her sadness and felt a deep pain himself. "There's no need to say anything, I understand everything," she forced a bitter smile, finally understanding why Dermot had grown fond of her.

And when she thought about it, she realized how could a man like him easily develop feelings for someone? The truth was, he didn't like her, he liked someone else through her.

"You don't understand, I like you, it has nothing to do with Ava," Dermot explained, feeling misunderstood by Evelyn.

But in this moment, how could Evelyn believe his words? She felt he was just making excuses. "I, Evelyn, refuse to be anyone's substitute."

"You're not..." Dermot wanted to explain.

"Let's break up," Evelyn interrupted him directly, her gaze cold and unwavering. There was no hesitation in her decision. Maybe she had made up her mind the day she saw Ava's photo. She had held onto a sliver of hope, hoping it was all just a misunderstanding. But now she knew it wasn't a mistake. Dermot liked her solely because of her striking resemblance to Ava.

The words "Let's break up" left Dermot completely stunned. He never thought Evelyn would utter those three words so easily. After what felt like an eternity, he finally snapped out of it and looked at Evelyn, "Are you sure?"

Evelyn met his gaze, her eyes filled with determination. "What is there to be unsure about? Maybe I don't have your status, but I refuse to be anyone's substitute."

If she couldn't be the one and only, then she would rather not have it at all. Even though it would hurt, even though she would feel reluctant, her rationality told her that she had to make a clean break to avoid further chaos.

A fire had been burning in Dermot's heart since he saw Greg that day, and now it turned into an inferno. But he had nowhere to vent, feeling stifled.

"Alright, I respect your decision," Dermot didn't offer any further explanations. Perhaps he felt that explanations were pointless. He turned and walked away, without looking back. Evelyn stood there, without trying to stop him.
