Chapter 524 I'm Not Like You
Evelyn made her way to a quiet corner, Lucia trailing behind her in silence, not uttering a single word.
Once they sat down, Lucia's suppressed emotions burst forth. "Evelyn, I hate you," she declared abruptly, startling Evelyn, who was in the midst of sipping her juice.
Evelyn turned to face her sister, who was glaring at her with intense venomous eyes, as if she could devour her right there.
With a light chuckle and another sip of her juice, Evelyn replied leisurely, "Hate me? That's fine by me."
"Of course, you don't care. You have everything now," Lucia spat out. Her envy and animosity towards Evelyn intensify.
Evelyn shrugged nonchalantly, keenly aware that, at this moment, she might as well be the stereotypical wicked step-sister, having returned to the Kyte family to claim the fatherly affection that once squarely belonged to Lucia. And now, with Blake consistently placing her first, she could somewhat sympathize with Lucia’s plight.
However, empathy aside, Evelyn certainly didn't feel she had done anything wrong. After all, Lucia had enjoyed their father's love for over two decades. What about her?
'I’ve only been back a few days. Isn't this rightfully mine from the start?' Evelyn thought.
"Lucia, I've said it before. I have no interest in competing with you as long as you stay out of my way," Evelyn warned with a firm gaze.
She had a hunch that if Lucia kept on this path, it might lead to some irrational decisions.
Considering Lucia was Blake's daughter, Evelyn didn’t want to exacerbate the situation. It was more of a friendly warning.
If Lucia dared to raise a hand against her, Evelyn wouldn’t hesitate to respond.
Regrettably, Lucia was not inclined to heed such advice at the moment. "Nonsense! If you truly didn't want to compete, you wouldn't have returned to the Kyte family at all."
"If that's your stance, then I don't have much else to say." Evelyn spread her hands, too exhausted to argue further.
In Lucia's selfish view, anyone in Evelyn's position should just perish outside and never return if they weren’t aiming to stake a claim in everything she held dear.
Given the circumstances, Evelyn felt further explanation would be futile.
Seeing Evelyn's silence, Lucia was determined not to let the matter rest. "What about that man who used to have your back? Why didn't he show up?"
Evelyn frowned, as Lucia went on, "Oh right, I forgot, he's from some minor family over in Morris City. He probably isn’t qualified to show up here."
"He’s your ex-husband, isn’t he?" Lucia smirked, her mood lifting as she found some leverage.
"Sister, why do you keep ties with him after the divorce? What would people say if word got out?"
Evelyn glanced at her. Lucia had clearly dug into Dermot's background. "Do I need to care what others think?"
"You don't care?" Lucia laughed mockingly. "Aren't you afraid of not being able to marry well again?"
Had Evelyn never experienced divorce, she would undoubtedly be one of the most sought-after socialites in Colombia, with numerous suitors vying for her attention.
But now?
Being divorced, no prestigious family concerned with their reputation would consider her. Perhaps only second-tier families would be willing to entertain the idea of marriage. After all, she was still a Lady of the Kyte family.
"It's only people like you who worry about marrying into a 'good' family. I'm not like you." Evelyn chuckled lightly, truly finding Lucia pitiful.
'Why should I fret over the prospect of not securing a favorable match? Can't I stand on my own?' She thought.
Annoyed by the mockery, Lucia snapped back, "Don't act all high and mighty. I don't believe for a second that you don't care."
'Evelyn's pretense irks me. It’s a common understanding, yet she shamefully can't admit it. Such hypocrisy,' Lucia thought, 'even I’m more genuine than that.'
