Chapter 887 I Wanted to Give Up

Lucia finally fell asleep in the middle of the night, exhausted. She expected Wade to scold her in the morning, but he was already gone, and someone had covered her with a blanket.

She looked at the blanket on her and couldn't help but smile.

Evelyn had no clue about what happened between Lucia and Wade. After dinner with Wade last night and a brief chat about his relationship with Lucia, she decided to stay out of it.

It was their business. Even though Evelyn didn't like Lucia, she couldn't stop them from being together.

Evelyn chose to let them handle it.

Early in the morning, Evelyn was already at the hospital. Her routine was familiar, but the patients were always different. Sometimes, she wondered if she could save more lives if she were more skilled.

"Miss," a little girl's voice interrupted Evelyn's thoughts.

Evelyn looked down to see a four or five-year-old girl. Her mom was one of Evelyn's patients.

Evelyn bent down and asked, "What's up?"

"My name is Alice Lewis. My mom asked me to come get you," Alice said softly.

Evelyn nodded and led Alice to her mom's room.

"Dr. Kyte," Amelia Lewis, Alice's mom, greeted Evelyn, looking tired. She waved to Alice, who then ran to her side.

Evelyn asked, "How are you feeling today? After a few more radiation sessions, we can schedule the surgery."

In neurosurgery, brain tumors were common. Before studying medicine, Evelyn had never met a brain tumor patient. Now, she saw many cancer patients.

"Dr. Kyte, I..." Amelia hesitated, making Evelyn uneasy.

Evelyn frowned. "Do you want to give up?"

Amelia nodded, tears in her eyes. "Yes. I can't use all our savings on myself. I need to leave some money for Alice."

This was common in the hospital. Usually, Evelyn wouldn't push patients to continue treatment, but seeing little Alice and knowing Amelia's condition, she said, "Your condition isn't that severe. Surgery could remove it completely."

Evelyn added, "Being there for Alice is better than leaving her money, right?"

Evelyn remembered Alice's dad, Quentin Lewis, was irresponsible. Since Amelia was hospitalized, he had only visited a few times, and those visits were full of complaints.

"I understand," Amelia cried. "But you said the surgery is only a possibility. What if it doesn't work? Even if it does, it might come back."

Since getting sick, Amelia had felt hopeless. If not for Alice, she would have given up long ago.

Yesterday, Quentin visited and said something that made sense to her. Though he wasn't great, he was still Alice's dad and wouldn't abandon her. Leaving money would ensure Alice's future.

That was why Amelia decided to give up.

Evelyn insisted, "The success rate is very high."

"Thank you, Dr. Kyte. I've made up my mind. Please help me with the discharge procedures," Amelia said firmly, showing this decision wasn't made overnight but after long thought.
