Chapter 532 If You Kneel and Beg Me
Kevin and Evelyn were deep in conversation, and the atmosphere inside the car was exceptionally cheerful. Given that it had been quite a while since they'd caught up, there were plenty of topics to cover.
Suddenly, Evelyn thought of her old mentor and said, "Is Mr. Smith still wandering around out there?"
"I wouldn't know. The old man never really keeps in touch. I thought you'd have an update," Kevin replied. Although they both were Mr. Smith's protégés, it was no secret that he favored Evelyn. Kevin could recall a time when he was slightly envious of her.
Evelyn let out a wry laugh. "I've been out of touch with him for a while too."
"Don't worry about it. He's always lived like this, and he knows what he's doing," Kevin said reassuringly, sensing her concern.
Nodding, Evelyn decided not to delve further. "When are you free? I owe you a meal."
Kevin had always been kind to her. Back when they were under the mentorship of Mr. Smith, Kevin had played the role of the supportive senior, and since he'd helped her out before, she naturally wanted to show her appreciation.
"I'm free whenever you call," Kevin said with a laugh, seizing the opportunity presented to him now.
Evelyn smiled back, "Then it's a date. I'll call you tomorrow."
"Sounds good," Kevin nodded, feeling an unexpected thrill of anticipation.
As the car approached the gates of the Kyte family manor, it became evident that Evelyn would be getting out soon, yet Kevin hadn’t gotten around to asking the question that had been nagging at him all evening.
"Evelyn," he called out at the last minute, just as she reached for the door handle.
She paused and turned back. "What is it?"
"Do you... have a boyfriend right now?" Kevin finally blurted out, knowing that not getting an answer might leave him restless all night.
Caught off guard by the question, Evelyn took a moment to respond.
Seeing her hesitation, Kevin quickly clarified, "I mean no offense. It's just that..."
"There’s no need to explain. I know you’re just looking out for me," Evelyn cut in with a smile, realizing what he meant. "I don’t, actually. You know my marriage ended, and right now, I'm taking life as it comes."
Her divorce was no secret. She hadn't felt the need to hide it and wasn't concerned with what others might think. She owned her experiences, the good and the bad.
"Ah," Kevin sighed with relief, feeling the tension escape him.
No boyfriend, huh? That was a relief. As for her previous marriage, Kevin wasn’t particularly bothered by it. He knew that Evelyn’s marriage had been brief and that she barely knew her ex-husband.
"You can't rush these things. It's important to take your time," he added with a hint of sensitivity.
Evelyn nodded and stepped out of the car.
Kevin also got out of the car to walk her to the door, watching as she entered the Kyte family manor. He waited until she vanished from sight, then turned back to his car, started the engine, and drove away.
Meanwhile, at the reception, Dermot made his exit shortly after Evelyn left.
The event itself held no significance for him. His only intention that evening was to lay eyes on Evelyn. With her gone, there wasn't any reason to stick around.
Just as he was about to slide into his car, Lucia approached him out of nowhere.
"I can't believe you actually had the guts to show up here," she said, arms crossed. Her frustration found an outlet in Dermot. It seemed she was ready to vent all her pent-up anger on someone she deemed fair game.
Dermot had no intention of engaging with her and reached for the car handle.
But Lucia wasn't about to let him off so easily. With a beckoning wave of her hand, a pack of burly bodyguards encircled him.
"If you kneel and beg me right now, I might just consider letting you go," Lucia taunted, looking down at him with a condescending tone.
