Chapter 973: How Am I Not as Good as Her
"What's she got that I don't?" Wendy asked, genuinely curious.
Evelyn had the looks and the background, but Wendy felt Greg didn't care about those things.
Greg sighed, feeling cornered. "You don't need to compare. You're different people. I want to break up, and it has nothing to do with her. I'm not going to be with her either."
"Is it that you won't be with her, or you know you can't compete?" Wendy shot back.
Evelyn had plenty of admirers, and Greg, from a modest background, didn't stand a chance.
Both Wendy and Greg knew this well.
"There's no point in dragging this out," Greg said, setting down his fork and leaning back, looking distant.
He was explaining himself because he knew he was in the wrong. Wendy had been good to him, so he felt he owed her an explanation.
Wendy gave a sad smile. "Yeah, it's pointless."
"Greg, if you're going to get married someday, why not to me? I'd be a good wife and wouldn't let you down." She could accept that Greg didn't love her.
"I thought about it, but I don't want to spend my life with someone I don't love."
"What's the point of that?" he asked, more to himself than to Wendy.
He didn't want to come home to someone he didn't care for or stay at work just to avoid home.
"So, are you going to find someone you like? Evelyn?" Wendy brought her up again, convinced she was the reason for the breakup.
Before Evelyn, things were fine. After meeting her twice, Greg wanted out. Wendy couldn't believe it was unrelated.
Greg shook his head, staring out the window. "I used to like her, but that doesn't mean I always will. I'll find someone else."
He just needed to wait for the right person.
"I'll meet someone, and so will you," he said, looking back at Wendy.
Wendy pressed her lips together, giving a bitter smile. "Maybe."
But she knew how hard it was to find someone she liked. It might never happen again.
"What if you never meet someone else? Would you reconsider me?" She looked at Greg with hope. If he said yes, she could wait forever.
Greg understood and shook his head firmly. "Better to have nothing than to settle."
Wendy felt a chill and couldn't even force a smile.
"Finish your spaghetti and then go home. The Hamilton and Cook family collaboration will continue as usual. Thanks for your hard work." He had wanted to clear things up with Wendy for a while but hadn't found the right moment.
Now that his grandfather was buried, he couldn't delay any longer, so he chose today to be honest.
"Okay." Wendy nodded and focused on her spaghetti, but it tasted like nothing.
Tears fell onto her plate, making it salty, but she didn't seem to notice and kept eating.
Seeing her like this, Greg felt a pang of pity. He opened his mouth but said nothing.
Better to rip the bandage off quickly. A good cry might be for the best.
