Chapter 579 Wait For Evelyn
Upon hearing the name Evelyn, a flicker of recognition passed over Ruby's face. A subtle tremor seized her momentarily, and she let out a hollow laugh. "Really? When did Evelyn return? She didn't mention it to me."
"Craig responded, his voice dripping with sarcasm, "The lady is now one of the Kyte heiresses over in Columbia – probably too preoccupied to remember she even has a friend like you." Internally, a sense of satisfaction washed over him, secretly hoping their friendship would continue to wane.
Ruby remained silent, her expression unreadable. Yet, deep within her, she was certain that Evelyn could never truly forget their bond.
Craig wrapped his arms around her, his voice softening, "Don't worry, I won't forget you like she did. Never."
"Are you... sure about that?" Ruby's voice wavered with uncertainty.
Craig didn't respond verbally, but his actions spoke louder than words. He pinned Ruby beneath him, greedily claiming everything he desired.
To his surprise, Ruby's response that night delighted him in equal measure.
The next day, sunlight spilled into the bedroom, a sultry scent lingering in the air from a night of passion.
Blinking her eyes open, Ruby found the spot beside her vacant – he must have already left for the office.
She rose, took a shower in the en suite, applied makeup, and then began to pack her belongings.
She had been oblivious to Evelyn's return to Moris City until the previous night, thanks to Craig's revelation. That's when she realized it was time for her to leave.
Glancing around, Ruby marveled at how long she had lived in this gilded cage, from initial resistance to reluctant acceptance, and now, an unexpected attachment.
But she hadn't lost her bearings; she knew what she wanted.
Craig had been good to her, and she had feelings for him, but...
She couldn't allow herself to be hidden away forever, to become the person she once despised the most.
Moreover, the man had never truly learned how to respect her, nor how to love someone.
Her belongings were few; she had no intention of taking the jewelry he'd once gifted her on a whim, only a few personal garments.
And so, she waited.
Even though she wasn't certain when Evelyn would arrive, she sat on the balcony, a hunch telling her she wouldn't be waiting long.
As if on cue, a sound from downstairs stirred her to her feet. Who else could it be but Evelyn?
She hurried down the steps, her body adorned with nothing but a small crossbody bag that hardly drew attention.
"Evelyn." Ruby walked toward her, no need for words; they understood each other.
"Ruby, you free today? Want to go out with me?" Evelyn already had her hand in a friendly grip.
Just as Ruby nodded and moved to leave with her, the villa's security intervened, "Ms. Kite, you cannot go out without Mr. Dermot's permission."
Ruby went pale, her lingering reluctance evaporating in an instant, "Craig told me himself that I should talk with Evelyn. You can call him to verify."
The bodyguard nodded and indeed made the call to Craig.
Soon, the phone was in Ruby's hands. She answered, "Last night, you told me to hang out with Evelyn to take my mind off things. Having second thoughts now?"
"Not at all. Just wanted to know if you've had breakfast," Craig said with a chuckle, his tone still tender.
Unfortunately for him, Ruby wasn't swayed by his gentleness.
She knew his composure stemmed from the certainty that she wouldn't, that she couldn't leave.
"I did." She lied, not in the mood to waste time on small talk with Craig.
There was a pause on the line. Craig didn't seem ready to hang up, which made Ruby uneasy.
Had he figured out Evelyn's plan?
