Chapter 1108: Nonsense
Joshua shot a quick glance at him and then said, "Y'all clear out. I need a word with Evelyn alone."
"Joshua." Mary didn't want to leave; she wasn't cool with them being alone together.
But just as she started to protest, Joshua's gaze cut to her, his face stone-cold. "Get out!"
Mary bit her lip. Brandon quickly stepped in. "Come on, come on, fill me in on what's been happening at home."
Brandon dragged Mary away, while Evelyn stayed put. Joshua motioned her over. "Evelyn, come sit."
After a beat of silence, Evelyn walked over. "You okay?"
Even though she had changed into fresh clothes and tried to look presentable, her voice was still raspy.
Joshua frowned, "What did Brandon do to you?"
"It's nothing; I was just locked up without food, that's all." Evelyn smiled like it was no big deal.
But Joshua's heart twisted hearing that. "That jerk! Don't worry; I'll make sure he pays."
Evelyn looked at Joshua and couldn't help but laugh, "If you really care about me, just let me leave."
"Evelyn."
"I was forced here by Brandon; you know that." Evelyn cut him off.
Joshua knew it all too well. Before he blacked out from being shot at the airport, the last thing he saw was Brandon holding a gun to Evelyn.
At that moment, he wanted to tell Brandon to let her go, but he passed out before he could say anything.
Honestly, when he woke up, he never thought Brandon would actually bring Evelyn along.
If Evelyn hadn't come, he would've accepted it.
But since Brandon brought her here, he really didn't want to see her leave.
He stayed silent, and Evelyn knew he was reluctant, sneering, "Joshua, are you really not gonna let me go?"
"Evelyn, I get you don't wanna be here, but since you are, why not stay a few days? When I'm better, I'll show you around, like a mini-vacation, okay?" He didn't flat-out refuse, but he didn't agree either.
Evelyn looked at him, guessing his game. "No matter what you say, I'm not staying."
"I get it." Joshua smiled, not looking mad.
"Good." Evelyn looked at him with mixed feelings.
Joshua knew she didn't want to stay, yet he still wanted her to. He probably didn't care about their friendship anymore.
With that in mind, Evelyn figured she didn't need to care either.
From now on, she and Joshua had no past ties. Now, she needed to find a way out of here.
She didn't confront Joshua directly. She knew this was his turf, and going head-to-head wouldn't help her.
Plus, there was Mary, always looking for a chance to mess with her. Evelyn wouldn't let her win.
"What's Mary to you?" Evelyn asked.
Joshua was a bit surprised she'd ask about Mary, but without thinking much, he said, "She's one of my trusted people, like Brandon."
"Just a subordinate?" Evelyn was skeptical. "She acts like your girlfriend."
"That's nonsense." Joshua snapped, "I'm not into her."
Evelyn smirked, "Really? 'Cause she was about to slash my face earlier."
