Chapter 499 The Past

Evelyn remained silent, her nerves tight as she braced herself to finally learn the truth—all of it—about who her mother was, what really happened all those years ago. She had thought she could be indifferent, but now, at this crucial moment, she realized she did care, deeply.

Blake began to recount the past, and Evelyn did not interrupt him, though she felt a pang of sorrow. She could imagine how young Blake must have been oblivious to the storm that was to come.

"Your mother and I, we fell in love the old-fashioned way—she was gentle, and the moment I saw her, I was smitten. It took quite a chase before I won her heart, and when I did, I was over the moon. I felt like the luckiest man alive."

Back then, I wasn't designated as the Kyte family's heir, and I thought they wouldn't object to our relationship. So, I decided to bring your mother home to meet my parents." Blake still believes that taking her home was one of his biggest mistakes.

If only he hadn't taken Evelyn's mother back to the Kyte estate, if they had lived undercover, perhaps they could have stayed together forever.

"As you might guess, the Kyte family was vehemently against our union, spouting all that nonsense about mismatched social status. I found it ludicrous—I didn't care about that."

But as someone who wasn't the heir, I didn't hold much sway within the family, and there was nothing I could do to stop them from targeting your mother.

They couldn't lay a hand on me—I was still a Kyte, after all. So, they turned their fury toward your mother instead.

We roamed the country, trying to dodge the family's relentless pursuit, only managing brief periods of peace before they would find us again.

It was only later that I discovered all Kytes were implanted with a tracker from birth. There was no escaping the family's surveillance, no matter where I went.

I didn't know it at the time, and I just kept us on the run, thinking we could outsmart them.

When your mother became pregnant, my fear of being found escalated, and we continued to hide.

It all came to a head the day you were born. The Kyte family found us; your mother, she... she told me to keep you safe. And then she was taken—taken by strangers. To this day, I still don't know if she's alive or dead."

Blake cradled the child in his arms, acutely aware that taking her back to the Kyte family meant sealing her fate. Without hesitation, he reached out to a trusted friend—Evelyn's grandfather in Tara Village—urging him to take Evelyn and flee to safety.

Later, he returned to the Kyte household and announced the tragic news of Evelyn's supposed death. To secure his position as the Kyte heir, he had no choice but to marry Dora. Despite not being there in person, Blake had made sure to keep tabs on Evelyn's upbringing from a distance, receiving regular updates, photos, and videos from her grandfather, watching her grow into the person she was today.

As Blake recounted these details, the furrow in Evelyn's brow did not ease. "You're telling me my mother left with strangers?" she asked, skepticism lacing her words.

"Yeah, I'm afraid I don't know where they came from, but your mom clearly knew them, which is why she left with them," Blake confessed, his voice tinged with the frustration of years spent searching for answers that remained elusive.

Evelyn's frown deepened, her mind swimming in uncertainty.

"Sometimes I wonder if it was the right decision to let your mother go with them. Given the circumstances, if she hadn't left, the Kytes would have certainly found her, and well, I'm afraid it might have been the end of the road for her."

But letting her mother leave with those strangers didn't guarantee her safety either—a realization that had haunted him in hindsight.
