Chapter 543 I Owe You One Again

Relieved by her acceptance, Kevin knew that the people he'd arranged were not the usual sorts. They would keep Evelyn safe.

“Hungry? I’ll get someone to bring food over,” he offered, recalling how they had originally planned to eat at a restaurant, but their plan was interrupted by unforeseen trouble.

Evelyn nodded, feeling hungry indeed.

Kevin sent someone to pick up some food for Evelyn and, as an afterthought, she asked for a phone charger as well. A dead phone was less than handy when she worried about missing important calls.

Soon enough, the food and the charger arrived. Evelyn plugged in her phone to recharge its lifeless battery before diving into her takeout container.

Noticing Kevin lingering around, she felt a flicker of embarrassment. "Kevin, why don't you head home and rest? It's getting late," she suggested.

"No worries, I'll wait for you to finish," Kevin responded nonchalantly, though he really wanted to stay with Evelyn. He knew confessing that right now would just freak her out, maybe even scare her off.

So he kept it light, which made Evelyn drop the subject too. She didn't want to seem like she was kicking him out.

As her phone buzzed back to life, she reached for it, but Kevin chose that moment to break the silence. "Evelyn, there's something I haven't told you yet."

She paused and looked his way, retracting her hand. "What's up?"

"When you passed out, I had no choice but to carry you to the hospital," he admitted.

Evelyn was puzzled. "And that's bad because...? You think I'd be upset with you?"

In her eyes, Kevin was her savior, regardless of how he got her to the hospital. The details hardly mattered to her.

"It's not a big deal, except we got snapped by some paparazzi. Now our photos are circulating online, stirring up some scandalous gossip," he said, avoiding her gaze.

Kevin could have squashed the story immediately. He had the influence to do so, but he hadn't. Instead, he let the rumors spread because he was curious about Evelyn's reaction.

Evelyn was indeed surprised, but she brushed it off effortlessly. "It's nothing, let them gossip. They'll forget this whole thing in a few days."

Having been the subject of online gossip before, Evelyn didn't care for the restless chatter of the web. A little time would make the rumors die down.

Relieved at her lack of concern, Kevin relaxed. "Yeah, I think so too. Rushing to kill the story might just make people more suspicious."

"Right." Evelyn nodded and returned to her meal, now scrolling through her phone.

Upon unlocking the screen, she noticed several missed calls. Not wanting to return them immediately with Kevin by her side, she browsed the news first.

True to Kevin's word, the gossip columns were branding her as his girlfriend, with all sorts of speculations. None of them mentioned that she had been unconscious at the time.

Though her attire concealed any sign of injury, someone should have guessed she was in a coma.

These online speculators, however, always primed for a scandal and never bothered with the truth.

After shutting off her smartphone, Evelyn finished her meal.

After cleaning up, she flashed a grin at Kevin. "Hey, Kevin, I promised you dinner tonight, and then this mess happened. Looks like I owe you one again."

"Don't worry about it," Kevin reassured Evelyn. Though he felt a tinge of regret, he was mostly relieved. "You've got plenty of chances to make it up to me. Right now, you just need to focus on healing up."

Kevin was grateful that he had noticed something off with Evelyn earlier in the day. If he hadn't picked up on the trouble, there was no telling what might have happened.
