Chapter 1271: Don't worry, I understand

In the evening, Evelyn and Dermot strolled into the restaurant, one after the other.

Evelyn couldn't shake Dermot off, and she figured John wouldn't mind too much.

"Evelyn!" John lit up when he saw her, but his smile dimmed a bit when he noticed Dermot tagging along.

Evelyn missed the shift in John's expression, but Dermot caught it.

Dermot smirked to himself. If he had any doubts before, now he was sure John had a thing for Evelyn.

They all sat down, and Evelyn said, "Dermot didn't have anywhere to eat, so I brought him along. You cool with that?"

"Yeah, no problem," John said, forcing a smile even though he was dying inside.

Evelyn didn't catch on, but Dermot, seeing John's discomfort, grinned smugly.

John called over the waiter and ordered a few dishes. "Evelyn, don't let the size of this place fool you. The food here is killer; you'll love it."

"Yeah, Moris City cuisine is my jam," Evelyn said, noticing the packed restaurant and guessing the food must be good.

While waiting for the food, Evelyn asked John about his studies and was happy to hear he was still top of his class.

"John, which college are you thinking about?" Evelyn asked.

John had mulled over this question a lot but never settled on an answer. "Evelyn, are you planning to come back to Moris City?"

Moris City University was solid, but if Evelyn wasn't coming back, he didn't want to stay.

"It's not that I won't come back, but I won't be living here much," Evelyn said, not catching on to his thoughts.

John replied, "Got it. I'm thinking about Radiant Academy."

"Really? That's awesome." Evelyn nodded. Radiant Academy was one of the top schools in Libertonia, and with John's grades, he'd get in no problem.

John scratched his head, a bit embarrassed. "If I stay in Golombia, I might be able to help you out."

"John, you don't have to do that," Evelyn frowned. "I support you because I want you to be who you want to be. Don't make decisions because of me."

"Evelyn, that's not it. I just think working at the Kyte Group would be cool. It's a big company, and I'm not even sure I'd get hired," John smiled, trying to keep Evelyn from overthinking.

Evelyn looked at him but didn't see anything off, so she nodded. "Getting into the Kyte Group is great, but I hope you follow your own heart and don't change your mind because of others."

"Evelyn, don't worry, I get it," John nodded, avoiding her eyes.

He was lying.

John chose Golombia and the Kyte Group all because of Evelyn.

If it weren't for her, he might've made different choices.

But life doesn't have many "ifs." From the day John met Evelyn, he was destined to be her guardian.

Even if Evelyn had someone else, he'd still protect her from the shadows.

It was his debt to Evelyn, and also his unspoken selfishness.
