"You…" Arianna was at a loss for words. They wouldn't stand astood no chance against Evelyn and her father—if it came to that, Joseph would certainly wouldn't take Arianna'snot side.

Once the two departed, it washad left, an awkward standoff ensued in the living room until Blake got uprose to take a walk outside, getting awayseeking an escape from their incessant nagging.
As soon as they were all out of sight, Arianna explodederupted in frustration, "Your dad is a deadbeat, passing up free money!"
"Let it go, Mom. What's the point of arguing with someone as cold-hearted as Evelyn? No matter what we say, she won't care about us," Emily didn't want to butt headsclash with Evelyn; she had a feeling they'd come outend up on the losing end.

In the kitchen, Evelyn slipped a thick envelope into Joseph's hands, "Jacob, I know I shouldn't meddleinterfere in family matters but..."
She paused, then continued, "If you let them go oncontinue like this, it's going to lead to disaster."
"You can't support them foreverindefinitely, and all they'll do is grow more greedy."
She could already see clear as dayclearly that Arianna had no respect for Joseph as a husband. There were times when she seemed capable of anything.
Joseph eyed the red envelope in his hand, wanting to refuse the cash gift, but Evelyn left him no choice. "Just take it, and don't tell the girls. Keep it to yourself, as a small token of my appreciation."
She insisted, and without much of an alternative, Joseph accepted. "I get itunderstand, I know what to do."
Evelyn didn't press further. Whether Joseph truly understood or was just appeasingplacating her, she'd done all that was necessary.
