Chapter 581 Evelyn is Under My Protection
A sharp crack echoed through the room as Craig Dermot crushed an object within his grasp. His face darkened, a storm brewing behind his eyes. He dialed his bodyguard's number, his voice a low growl, "Where is she?"
"Ms. Kite and Miss Evelyn have retreated to the restroom," came the bodyguard's response, his tone cautious as he sensed the shift in Mr. Dermot's mood.
Craig's brow furrowed, a muscle twitching in irritation, "And how long have they been absent?"
The bodyguard's voice wavered with a sudden surge of unease, "Approximately fifteen minutes, sir."
"Useless! Find them immediately!" Craig's command thundered through the room as he surged to his feet, his executive chair skidding backward. He stormed toward the door, his orders echoing behind him, "Monitor all airports, train, and bus stations. If they slip through our grasp, you'll rue the day!"
As he strode purposefully, Craig's mind churned with suspicion. Evelyn's visit had not been without ulterior motives, he was certain.
Meanwhile, ensconced within a vehicle, Evelyn anxiously checked the time, urging the driver to hasten their pace. Craig was no fool. It wouldn't take him long to connect the dots between the Kite parents' departure and Ruby's sudden absence. They needed to act swiftly.
Seeing Evelyn's mounting anxiety, Ruby began to feel the strain herself, her palms slick with nervous sweat. Fortunately, their arrival at the airport was seamless, the private jet affording them swift access to the VIP lane.
Evelyn exhaled a sigh of relief as they reached the gate, knowing that once they were airborne, Craig would be powerless to reach them.
Just as Evelyn was about to board the plane with Ruby, she noticed Ruby's gaze drifting back. A frown creased her brow as she queried, "Ruby, what's troubling you?"
Ruby remained silent, but the look in her eyes sent a chill down Evelyn's spine. "Are you expecting Craig to appear?"
"Evelyn, I..." Ruby's words were abruptly cut off as the sound of approaching footsteps filled the air. A crowd had formed, encircling them, with Craig looming ominously at the center.
His face was a mask of fury, his gaze locked onto Ruby from a distance, a vein pulsating on his forehead. "Come here," he commanded, his voice a dangerous whisper.
Ruby held her ground, her voice steady, "Why should I? Just let me go."
"Go? And where do you propose to go?" Craig's voice dripped with scorn. "You, Ruby, are mine in life and in death. Do you really believe you can just walk away?"
"In your dreams!" she retorted.
Craig was resolute. He would not allow her to escape. He would drag her back home, keep her confined, never to step foot outside again.
His gaze then shifted to Evelyn, a palpable threat emanating from his stare, "So, you believe that with the backing of the Kyte family, I can't touch you?"
"And what exactly can you do to me?" Evelyn retorted, her voice steady. Even surrounded, she was confident she could protect Ruby.
Craig's face paled with rage at her defiance. He barked at his bodyguards, "Take them both back."
The Kyte family? He scoffed inwardly. 'Let them come for her themselves. Let's see if they can handle what I throw at them without losing some skin. They won't be the same after dealing with Craig.'
Before Craig's men could move, Dermot stepped forward, positioning himself protectively in front of Evelyn. " Evelyn is with me."
"Yours?" Craig's eyebrow arched, a sudden realization dawning on him as his expression shifted, "So, you were aware of her plan to whisk Ruby away today?"
Dermot remained silent, but his silence was all the confirmation Craig needed.
"Dermot!" he roared, his voice echoing with betrayal, "What a brother you turned out to be!"
Betrayal by his own brother was something he had never anticipated.
Evelyn interjected, her voice laced with disdain, "There's no need to direct your anger at Dermot. Instead of reflecting on your own faults, you're quick to point fingers. How childish!"
"I'm the one at fault? You presume to be Ruby's savior, that you need to rescue her? Have you ever considered whether she desires your salvation?" His voice was icy as he turned his gaze to Ruby.
