Chapter 1096: The Human Heart Is Hard to Fathom
On the way back, Evelyn was just staring out the car window, not saying a word.
Dermot glanced over, looking kinda worried. "What's on your mind?"
"Not much, just thinking how people can be so hard to figure out," Evelyn sighed. The Joshua she used to know seemed like a totally different person now.
Today, Joshua was this big-shot mercenary leader overseas.
Evelyn had already found out Joshua's real deal from Dermot.
A mercenary leader, huh? Pretty wild, and she had no clue before.
The car came to a sudden stop, and Dermot turned to her, all serious. "Not everyone is like him, Evelyn. At least you know I'm always straight with you."
Evelyn gave him a small smile. "Straight, huh? Maybe."
She suddenly felt like she couldn't trust anyone.
Dermot wasn't having it. He cupped her face and kissed her out of nowhere. "That's your punishment for not trusting me."
Evelyn tried to push him away but gave up after a bit, letting him kiss her.
The kiss went on for a while, leaving them both a little breathless.
"Evelyn, once this whole mess is sorted, let's get married," Dermot blurted out. He didn't want to wait anymore, scared things might change.
Evelyn was caught off guard. "I'm not even your girlfriend yet, and you want to marry me? Chill out, Dermot. Let's take it slow."
She thought he'd ask her to be his girlfriend first, but he jumped straight to marriage.
"I think we know each other well enough to skip the dating part. Getting married would be awesome; that way, no one else would try to snatch you up," Dermot thought it was a solid plan, but Evelyn wasn't so sure.
"If it's about being your girlfriend, I might think about it. But marriage? Not happening right now." Last time, they got hitched without dating, and she always regretted it.
Now Dermot wanted to skip straight to marriage again, and she wasn't ready.
She wanted to enjoy the whole dating thing.
Sarah was always showing off her relationship on Facebook, making her jealous.
Dermot chuckled, a bit defeated, "So, you're down to be my girlfriend?"
Evelyn was taken aback, not sure how to respond.
"Evelyn, will you be my girlfriend?" Dermot asked again.
Evelyn was speechless.
After a long pause, Evelyn didn't flat-out refuse. "Let's wait until Joshua's situation is sorted."
She needed to make sure this wasn't all part of Joshua's plan. What if his injury was legit?
Dermot wasn't mad; he was confident. "Alright."
As long as Evelyn didn't trust Joshua like before, it was a win for him.
"Where to?" Dermot restarted the car and looked at her.
"Golombia Hospital," Evelyn said slowly. She needed to get to the bottom of things.
Dermot drove to the hospital entrance quickly. He wanted to go with her, but Evelyn stopped him, "The Doyle family has a ton of issues. You go deal with them. I can handle this."
Dermot agreed, "Okay. But don't get into any fights with Joshua, and especially not with Brandon."
He was worried about her safety. Even if Joshua wouldn't hurt her, Brandon might.
Evelyn's face was serious, and she got what Dermot meant. "Got it. You go on."
After watching Evelyn go into the hospital, Dermot got back in the car and drove off.
Evelyn was right; the Doyle family had a lot of problems that needed his attention. He had to sort them out before dealing with Joshua.
He could almost see it coming—once Joshua was exposed, he wouldn't just take it.
When the time came, there'd be a showdown.
But this time, Dermot was sure he'd come out on top.
