Chapter 525 Out of My League
Lucia couldn't bear to hang around Evelyn any longer. The banquet was filled with her relatives and friends. She was in her element here, unlike Evelyn, a country girl clearly out of her depth.
"Cousin." Lucia approached Charles Roberts with a look of distress.
Charles looked concerned. "I've heard about your family troubles. I know it's tough, but the Roberts family can't get too involved with the Kyte family's affairs."
"I understand," Lucia replied. Dora had already warned her about this, and Lucia had no intention of asking Charles to go against the Kyte family. She thought, "After all, they're my family."
"Cousin, it just irks me. Why does Father dote on her so much just because she returned? Now, he even brings her to these social events. He's never done that for me before," Lucia grumbled, her heart aching from Blake's favoritism.
Charles glanced toward Evelyn, who wasn't too far away. He was also puzzled by Blake's intentions.
Perhaps the child of a beloved always received different treatment.
Charles dared not voice such a thought in Lucia's presence, though. It could stir up another temper tantrum.
After a brief silence, he offered a reassuring smile, "Don't worry. Even if your father dotes on her, she won't get her way in Columbia. Remember, this is where you grew up."
"Isn't the host of tonight's party that guy who's been chasing you for a while now? It's time to make use of him."
His words sparked an idea in Lucia's mind.
Tonight's event was held by the Lock family, one of the top ten families in Columbia. Leap Lock, their heir, had been pursuing her persistently. She hadn't said yes, mainly because she felt the Lock family wasn't on par with the Kyte family.
Nevertheless, Lucia had kept him interested, knowing that aligning herself with one of the top families, even as a backup plan, could prove advantageous.
With that in mind, her mood lifted instantly, "Cousin, I know exactly what to do."
"Go on, then," Charles encouraged with a smile. Lucia was, after all, his cousin. If she inherited the Kyte family's assets, it could work in his favor. She was easier to manipulate, and who knew, maybe one day, he could bring the Kyte family under the wing of the Roberts family.
Evelyn's sudden return had alerted him. She wasn't someone to be taken lightly. Known throughout Moris City and running her own company, Evelyn's ambitions were evident. If the Kyte family were to fall under her control, Charles feared his plans to merge the Kyte family with the Roberts family would be in jeopardy.
So, from every angle, he had to back Lucia up.
Although...
As his gaze lingered on Evelyn once more, he walked towards her. Charles saw no harm in cultivating a relationship there as well, just in case.
Having just grabbed a quick bite, Evelyn spotted Charles approaching.
"Evelyn, I'm your cousin," he declared, presuming familiarity with ease.
Cousin?
Evelyn furrowed her brows, quick to retort, "You must be joking, Mr. Roberts. I'm certainly out of your league."
"No worries. If you're not comfortable with 'cousin,' just call me Charles," He replied, unfazed by her response and still smiling.
Evelyn didn't bother to keep looking at him, having no intention of engaging further.
Undeterred, Charles took a seat beside her. "New to Columbia? You might not have many friends here yet. Let me introduce you to some."
"No, thanks," Evelyn rebuffed.
Her impression of Dora, and by extension, the entire Roberts family, was far from favorable.
Moreover, she sensed Charles's intentions weren't pure; something was amiss, and it was far from simple. She preferred to steer clear of such complications.
