Chapter 491 I'll Remember This

Lucia was sipping coffee, speaking disparagingly with an air of disdain. Little did she realize that Evelyn, the subject of her scorn, was in the café too, picking up every dismissive word.

Evelyn didn't know Lucia and couldn't fathom why she had attracted such animosity. But Evelyn wasn't exactly the sort to turn the other cheek either. Why should she stay quiet and take the high road when her name was being dragged through the mud?

Rising to her feet, Evelyn made her way over to Lucia and tapped her lightly on the shoulder. Lucia turned, staring into Evelyn's smiling face, feeling a vague sense of recognition but unable to place her.

"Who are you? Why are you tapping me? Are you crazy or something?" Lucia fired off the questions, each tinged with displeasure.

Still smiling, Evelyn didn't miss a beat. "Oh, I'm just that 'wretched woman' Evelyn you've been talking about."

Silence fell like a thick curtain. Lucia gaped at Evelyn, disbelief etched across her face. She remembered seeing Evelyn's picture before; she was pretty, sure, but not stunning. Yet, the woman standing before her...

Lucia was at a loss for words. It took her friend's voice to break the trance. "So you're Evelyn? You got Lucia scolded by her father. We thought you were an innocent party, but looking at you now, sly as a fox, you probably deserved it."

Evelyn nearly laughed. The gall of some people!

"Ridiculous," she chuckled, fixing her gaze on Lucia. "You think your father's scolding is my fault? It's not because of your lazy attitude toward learning. I'm just a convenient excuse."

Isn't that always the way with parents, casting others in a golden light to highlight their own children's shortcomings?

"How dare you call me lazy and uneducated? Do you have any idea who I am?" lashed out Lucia, more insulted by Evelyn's words than she had ever been by her father's criticism.

Evelyn shrugged nonchalantly, her voice dripping with mockery. "I honestly have no clue who you are, but does your identity change the fact that you're uneducated and uncouth?"

That left Lucia speechless, glowering, fists clenched as if ready to throw a punch.

"Lucia is a daughter of the Kyte family. How can you afford to offend her? You've signed your death warrant!" Kennedy chimed in, standing up for his flustered friend, his tone conveying threat and warning.

Evelyn froze, struck by the irony. How fateful that the very girl who'd been slandering her behind her back was none other than a member of the Kyte family. A twisted fate, indeed.
Lucia, noticing Evelyn's silence, mistook it for fear and smugly exclaimed, "Feeling scared now? Let me tell you, my father is the President of Kyte Group. Including this building you're standing in, it's all Kyte family territory."

"Don't think that just because you share the Kyte name you're on my level. There's a world of difference between us," she taunted, her pride evident in her voice. As a daughter of the Kyte family, she had every reason to boast.

"I'll remember this, Evelyn, was it? Just you wait!" she seethed before storming off with her previous companion, leaving the coffee shop behind.

Evelyn watched them leave, rooted to the spot in contemplation. To the onlookers, she seemed too frightened to move. In Columbia, crossing the Kyte family was akin to signing one's own death warrant. But Evelyn couldn't care less about their thoughts. Initially hesitant, she was now considering seeking an audience with the man who was her biological father. After all, she had no intention of letting Lucia bask in her arrogance forever.

She wondered, with a touch of amusement, how Lucia would react upon discovering that she, too, was a daughter of the Kyte family. Surely, that revelation would be quite entertaining.
