Chapter 1223: She Was Just Overthinking It
On the way to the restaurant, Evelyn was all quiet, still chewing on what Dermot had said.
She hadn't really thought about it before, but now, it was starting to click. Dermot's words were making sense.
Maybe Bella didn't give a damn about Nathaniel, might even hate his guts.
But Oscar? That was a whole different story. She'd raised him since he was a kid. No matter how Oscar felt about her now, she must've really cared for her stepson.
Raising a kid from diapers to their twenties? That kind of bond doesn't just vanish.
She sighed. She'd wanted to cut ties with the Flores family, but now it seemed like that wasn't gonna happen.
"Evelyn, babe, chill. Your mom might have a soft spot for Oscar, sure, but it ain't stronger than what she feels for you. If she had to choose, she'd pick you, no doubt."
Evelyn chuckled. Really? She wasn't so sure.
Even though she was Bella's real daughter, sometimes raising someone could create a stronger bond than blood.
"Don't worry, I'm not stressing about that. I'm just worried Oscar might stir up some trouble later." She had zero interest in getting tangled up with the Flores family and didn't care who Bella cared about.
She felt her life was pretty good and didn't need Bella's concern.
"Don't sweat it. If anything goes down, I got your back." Dermot smiled at her.
Dermot's gentle smile did calm Evelyn down a bit. Maybe she was overthinking it.
With the Kyte family and the Doyle family teaming up, they might not be untouchable in Libertonia, but most folks wouldn't dare mess with them.
She was just stressing for no reason.
She nodded and smiled back at Dermot. "Yeah, I get it."
Just then, Oscar's car pulled up ahead, and Dermot followed. The three of them walked into the restaurant.
Oscar had apparently booked the whole place, so it was just them, nice and quiet.
Evelyn frowned and stayed close to Dermot, still wary of Oscar.
But her worries were for nothing.
Oscar was just there to have a meal. During dinner, he chatted with Evelyn about random stuff, like he was genuinely trying to get to know her.
Even after dinner, when Evelyn and Dermot got back to the villa, she was still processing it.
"Still thinking about Oscar's game plan?" Dermot asked, noticing she hadn't said a word since they got back, a bit helpless.
He poured her a glass of water and continued, "Don't be fooled by his innocent act. He's actually pretty sharp."
"Teaming up with our families would be a huge win for him, and he knows it."
Evelyn nodded. She had a hunch that was Oscar's angle.
"Oscar's not like Nathaniel. Looks like he's planning to clean up the Flores Group's act and ditch the shady stuff, so he needs our help," Dermot's words made things clearer for Evelyn.
She nodded thoughtfully, finally getting it. "I see. The Flores Group's business is different from ours. Teaming up with us wouldn't make sense unless he's planning to change things up."
"Don't worry. I don't think he's got any bad intentions. He just genuinely wants our help." Dermot usually didn't get involved in these matters, but seeing Evelyn so troubled, he decided to explain things to her tonight.
