Chapter 1280: You've Been Sold

Half an hour later, the car rolled up in front of this tiny villa.

Dermot and Evelyn had zero plans to go inside and bug anyone; they just wanted to peep from the outside. Evelyn didn't want her showing up to remind Ethan and Mia of their dead parents.

Soon enough, someone opened the door and stepped out.

Evelyn instantly recognized the girl as Mia, even though she didn't go by that name anymore.

Right then, she was rocking a gorgeous dress and had a big ol' smile plastered on her face. She looked super happy.

Not long after, Ethan came out too, and the two of them started goofing around in the villa's garden. It was a sweet sight.

"Chill, they seem to be doing just fine," Dermot said, pulling Evelyn into a hug. He had done a deep dive on this family before. If he hadn't known them, he wouldn't have let them adopt Mia and Ethan.

Evelyn nodded. "As long as they're good, I'm good."

Dermot and Evelyn hung around outside the villa for a while. They didn't leave until Mia and Ethan went back inside.

They wandered aimlessly around the streets.

Meanwhile, over at the Niall place in Golombia, while Niall was still grinding away at the company, Lily was chilling at home alone.

When the doorbell rang, she thought it was weird. Did Niall forget his keys?

She got up and walked over to open the door. "How could you be so careless? Did you forget to bring..."

Before Lily could finish her sentence, her smile dropped like a rock when she saw who was at the door. "Who are you?"

"You're Lily, right?" Dwayne Cruz said with a sly grin.

Lily stayed quiet as the guy's eyes roamed over her. "Not bad," he said.

Lily had no clue who these people were, but her gut was screaming that they were bad news.

So she took a couple of steps back, ready to slam the door shut any second.

"Who the heck are you? What do you want?" she asked again.

Dwayne gave her a once-over and then said, "Your parents borrowed money from me. They couldn't pay it back, so they sold you to me."

Lily was floored. "No way!"

"Here's the receipt. Check it out yourself." With that, Dwayne tossed a receipt in front of Lily.

Lily picked it up with shaky hands. When she saw the familiar handwriting, her heart sank.

She had thought they were just greedy, that they didn't love her, and she had put up with it. But now...

She suddenly felt like a fool. In their hearts, they probably never saw her as their daughter.

Forcing herself to stay calm, Lily threw the receipt back. "Is this receipt even legit? If they owe you money, go find them. Why come to me?"

With that, Lily tried to close the door.

But before she could shut it, the guy grabbed it. "We don't care if it's legal or not. Your parents sold you to me, so you gotta come with me."

"Let go!" Lily gritted her teeth, knowing this guy wasn't gonna let her go easy.

"How much do they owe you? I'll pay it back," Lily said.

Dwayne let go of the door, but before Lily could close it, he wedged his foot in. "Alright, you can pay it back. It's not much, just two hundred grand."

"Two hundred grand?" Lily couldn't believe it. Why would her parents borrow that much cash?

As if reading her mind, Dwayne continued, "I heard your brother's girlfriend's family demanded a lot of money. Otherwise, she wouldn't marry your brother, so your parents had no choice but to borrow from me."

Lily's face went pale.

Of course, what else could it be but for her useless brother?
