Chapter 1159: What If I Don't Want To

Evelyn knocked on the door and strolled in. Sarah had already swapped out her clothes. "Evelyn, why aren't you downstairs partying?"

"I came to check on you and also to find Ruby," Evelyn said. She wasn't trying to mess up Sarah and Keith's wedding night; it was just that Keith was still downstairs chugging drinks with his buddies. Evelyn thought it wasn't cool for Sarah to be alone, so she came up to see her.

"What's up with Ruby?" Sarah asked.

Evelyn shrugged. "Nothing; she's probably with Alex somewhere."

Sarah didn't seem worried. "I didn't know Alex before, but I can tell he really digs Ruby. I just don't know when he's gonna spill his guts to her."

Anyone with half a brain could see it, even Ruby knew, but Alex just wouldn't man up and confess his love for her.

"Yeah, just wait. He won't hold out much longer." With Craig also chasing Ruby, Sarah didn't think Alex wouldn't be sweating it.

The two chatted as they left the room and headed back downstairs.

In the backyard, Ruby was dragged there by Alex, feeling a bit lost. "Why'd you bring me here?"

Compared to the buzzing front yard, it was way quieter here, almost deserted.

She had been having a blast when Alex yanked her over.

"I need to tell you something," Alex said, his breath reeking of booze.

Ruby hesitated. "You sure this is the right spot for it?"

She felt the timing and place were off, but Alex seemed dead set.

"Ruby, is there someone you like right now?" Alex asked, sounding a bit unsure.

Ruby almost rolled her eyes, thinking if she had someone she liked, would she be wasting time here with you?

"No," Ruby answered.

Alex was initially stoked but then got bummed out as he thought of something. "No? Then what do you think of me?"

Ruby eyed him skeptically and cut to the chase. "Alex, if you're trying to say you like me, just spit it out. Don't beat around the bush."

She didn't dig Alex's overly cautious approach. If you like someone, just come out and say it. Why ask about her feelings first?

If she said she wasn't interested, would he just bail?

Alex was taken aback by Ruby's bluntness and found himself momentarily speechless. "Ruby, I just..."

He was so nervous he couldn't talk straight.

Ruby sighed, "You wanna tell me you like me, right?"

Alex nodded eagerly. "Yeah."

"Then just say it directly. Why beat around the bush?" She appreciated straightforwardness.

Alex blushed, feeling a bit embarrassed. "I was scared you'd say no."

Seeing Alex's red cheeks, Ruby couldn't help but think the roles were reversed.

She hadn't even blushed, but Alex did first.

"Ruby?" Alex's voice was anxious as her silence dragged on. "Will you be my girlfriend?"

"What if I don't want to?" Ruby rolled her eyes at him.

Alex was stunned and once again at a loss. "If you don't want to, then we can be friends first. I'll wait until you do."

"Alex, you're a cop. Are you this shy when handling cases?" Ruby couldn't help but ask. This was really different from the tough cop she had imagined.

Alex was taken aback, then shook his head. "No, I'm not like this at work."

"It's my first time telling someone my feelings. I'm a bit nervous," Alex admitted honestly.
