Chapter 515 Quite the Grandiose Air About You
After her conversation with Luke, Evelyn left the hotel. She didn’t need to concern herself with the aftermath; her focus was on how to handle the evening dinner gala.
Although the gala hadn’t started yet, she anticipated a tough battle ahead. Lucia and her daughter would certainly not miss a chance to target her, and who knew what troubles they would concoct.
Nonetheless, Evelyn wasn't worried. She was prepared to counter any move they made – their little schemes didn't scare her.
Still, preparations had to be made; she couldn't afford to give them the satisfaction of seeing her falter. Tonight was her debut in front of Columbia's elite families, and she couldn't disappoint.
Just as she pondered her next move, her phone rang with an unfamiliar number. Hesitating for a moment, she answered, "Hello, who is this?"
"Sis, it's Lucia," came the sweet, syrupy voice that might have seemed cute to anyone else but made Evelyn feel nauseated.
However, Evelyn kept her feelings to herself and cut straight to the chase, "What do you want?"
"Look, I know you just arrived in Columbia and probably don't know any stylists around here, so I thought - how about we get ready for the dinner party together?" she asked, her tone casual, belying the distaste she harbored for Evelyn. At this moment, however, she had to maintain a façade of propriety for Blake's sake, and that meant calling Evelyn, despite her true feelings.
Evelyn remained silent, prompting Lucia to add, "It's not just any dinner. We have to dress to impress, especially with us both being daughters of the Kyte family. We can't afford to embarrass our name."
In Lucia's mind, Evelyn had probably never attended a dinner party, let alone one of such high caliber. The condescension was clear.
Secretly hoping for a rejection, so she could witness Evelyn's embarrassment, Lucia was disappointed when Evelyn nonchalantly said, "Really? Alright then, send your driver to pick me up." Even though Evelyn could have reached out to her own stylist, she wasn't about to pass up the opportunity to let Lucia play the good Samaritan.
Lucia's irritation flared when she realized Evelyn hadn't declined. "I'll text you the address; you can make your own way here," Lucia snapped back, thinking to herself, since when did Evelyn consider herself a lady of the Kyte family to be chauffeured around?
"Sister, I'm new in town, remember?" Evelyn replied with a playful smile, pushing back against Lucia's reluctance. "If you're offering help, shouldn't you be a little more patient? Such impatience is unbecoming."
Biting her lip in frustration but unable to back down now, Lucia finally conceded, "Fine, I'll send the driver."
"Thank you, dear sister," Evelyn replied, a hint of mischief in her voice, well aware of Lucia's seething anger.
But for Evelyn, this little game was amusing.
Not long after, the Kyte family car pulled up in front of Evelyn, the driver opening the door for her and revealing, to her amusement, Lucia sitting inside.
Welcoming her with sarcasm, Lucia couldn't help but say, "What a grand entrance, sister. I've come personally to have you picked up."
Evelyn, unfazed, settled into the seat and replied coolly, "If my sister insists on looking after me, who am I to refuse such courtesy?"
Fuming, Lucia nearly retorted but held back. "Let's go," Evelyn urged the driver. "We're short on time, and I'm sure it takes quite a while for my sister to get ready."
At first Lucia agreed, avoiding confrontation, but as they drove on, the implication dawned on her. Was Evelyn subtly calling her unattractive?
