Chapter 962: I Lied to You Before
The next day, while Evelyn was busy at the hospital, she got an unexpected call from Joshua. It was the first time he'd reached out since their last encounter.
"Evelyn, can you do lunch?" Joshua's voice was flat, no emotion.
She checked the time—two hours until her lunch break. She figured she could wrap up with her patients by then. "Sure," she replied.
After hanging up, she went back to work, not overthinking why Joshua wanted to meet.
Two hours later, she met him at the hospital entrance.
"Sorry, I'm a bit late," she said, explaining that a patient had delayed her.
Joshua didn't mind and opened the car door for her. "Hop in. I'll take you to eat."
Evelyn got in without asking where they were headed. The drive was silent; Joshua seemed unsure what to say, and Evelyn waited for him to start.
They soon arrived at a restaurant. Joshua led her to a quiet private room.
"What do you want to eat?" Joshua asked, acting like nothing had happened. If they hadn't been out of touch for days, Evelyn might've thought he had no intention of explaining anything.
She snapped out of her thoughts. "You decide. I'm good with anything."
Joshua nodded and ordered a few of her favorite dishes.
Once the waiter left, Evelyn looked at Joshua, waiting for him to speak.
Joshua met her gaze and chuckled. "Evelyn, you're staring at me like that, and it's making me feel a lot of pressure."
"Really? I'm just waiting for your explanation." If he didn't plan to explain, she saw no point in continuing to see him.
She trusted Joshua wouldn't hurt her, but he seemed different now, wrapped in enigmas and potential risks.
Joshua sighed, knowing he couldn't dodge the topic.
He had prepared himself, so he wasn't completely at a loss. "I lied to you before."
Evelyn frowned but stayed silent, listening.
"I wasn't just working abroad. I got involved with some people and gained a reputation. Now, I have a few people under me," Joshua said.
He wasn't lying. He did know some people, but he'd gotten involved in shady activities abroad and accidentally became the leader of a mercenary group.
Evelyn's frown deepened. "Why did it turn out like this? You went abroad to study. With your skills, you should've had a good job after graduation."
"It wasn't as easy as I thought. Things didn't go as planned." Joshua didn't want to dive into details. He hadn't expected to end up where he was.
But he didn't regret it.
If he hadn't taken this path, he would've returned as just an ordinary worker. How could he compete with Dermot with that kind of life?
