Chapter 1095: The Truth

Dermot gave a half-smile, feeling kinda bummed. "Evelyn, seriously? You think I'd pull something like that? Do something so easy to catch?"

If Tommy was his guy, with Evelyn's skills now, she'd figure it out in no time.

"Ms. Kyte, got some pics here. Once you see 'em, you'll know I'm legit." Tommy handed over his phone. First thing he had to do was prove who he was.

Evelyn took the phone and started swiping through the photos.

They were all snaps of Tommy with different folks, probably the partners he mentioned.

One of them was someone Evelyn knew well, Brandon.

Looked like Tommy and Brandon were tight; there were a bunch of pics of them together.

In the last photo, Evelyn saw Joshua. Sure, it was just his back, but Evelyn could tell it was him.

"Mr. Garcia hates taking pics and doesn't like people knowing who he is, so I snapped this one on the sly. But if you know Mr. Garcia, you should recognize him," Tommy said.

Evelyn didn't say anything, but her eyes were already tearing up.

She didn't want to believe it. Before, she could ignore the evidence about Joshua's doctor, but now?

Could she still deny this had nothing to do with Joshua?

Dermot waved Tommy off, signaling him to leave.

After he left, Dermot spoke up, "When I first found out he'd be in a wheelchair for life 'cause he saved you, I was actually grateful. Back then, I had no doubts about him. But later, when he suddenly asked you to take care of him and even move into his place, I found it kinda weird."

Dermot added, "Then, when Joshua refused to be checked by Dr. Gray, my suspicions grew."

Dermot paused for a moment and then brought up that day's incident. "Now that I think about it, the day Joshua called me over was probably a setup."

"A setup? Why?" Evelyn snapped back to reality and asked.

"On one hand, to make you hate me even more," Dermot paused for a moment and then continued, "On the other hand, to prep for taking you abroad. He knew his advantage here wasn't great and that I could easily find dirt on him, so he wanted to bail."

Dermot added, "But you wouldn't just up and leave with him, so he staged the kidnapping to get what he wanted."

By now, Dermot had it all figured out.

Dermot thought, 'Joshua, you're not the only smart one around here.'

Maybe it was all too much, and Evelyn couldn't wrap her head around it. "Why'd he do this?"

"You should know," Dermot looked at her with a complicated expression.

Evelyn was stunned and then got it.

Was it just to be with her?

Evelyn laughed, finding it ridiculous.

"If you still don't buy it, you can check Brandon. Last night, he came to off Tommy, but I shot him in the right arm. See if he's got a wound there, and you'll know," Dermot offered another piece of proof.

Evelyn nodded. She wouldn't just check; she'd dig into it herself.

She'd always trusted Joshua without question before, never bothering to look deeper. But now, with doubt creeping in, she realized that if she didn't get to the bottom of it, she wouldn't be able to sleep at night.
