Chapter 1162: I Really Like This State
Sarah and Keith's wedding wrapped up, and Evelyn was left twiddling her thumbs. Thank God the holiday was almost over, and she could get back to work. Sitting at home all day was driving her nuts.
"Hey, Dr. Kyte, back from vacay?" People greeted her as she strolled back into the department.
Evelyn nodded and gave a quick smile to each one. She was definitely more into the hustle and bustle of the hospital.
Sure, there was some competition here and there, but most of the time, everyone was just focused on their patients, no drama.
Her first day back was a whirlwind, the clinic was slammed until 7 PM. She finally saw her last patient and felt that satisfying mix of exhaustion and accomplishment.
"All done?" Dermot was suddenly at her office door, leaning against the frame in his gray coat, looking all cool and distant.
But Evelyn knew Dermot was just a bit reserved, not as icy as he seemed.
She stood up, ditched her white coat, and walked over to him. "Yeah, let's bounce. I'm starving."
"Are you wiped out?" Dermot asked as they headed out.
Evelyn shook her head, feeling pretty good. "I love being this busy."
They disappeared from the hospital, and Lisa and Geoffrey stepped out from around a corner. "See? Told you Evelyn's boyfriend would be someone impressive. Was I wrong?"
"Nope, you nailed it," Geoffrey said, still confused by Lisa's obsession with the whole thing.
"So, you finally letting go of that idea?" Lisa asked.
Geoffrey sighed and threw up his hands. "Lisa, I haven't had feelings for her in forever. Why won't you believe me?"
Lisa had stressed over whether Geoffrey still liked Evelyn a million times, and he'd explained a million times, but she just wouldn't buy it.
Lisa pouted, looking where Evelyn and Dermot had gone. "I believe you, but Evelyn's so amazing. It's normal to like her."
If she were a guy, she'd probably like Evelyn too.
"By that logic, Dermot's pretty amazing too. Do you like him?" Geoffrey shot back.
"Don't be silly. I don't even know him," Lisa said. Sure, Dermot was impressive and good-looking, but she really didn't have any feelings for him.
Geoffrey took her hand. "Exactly. Just 'cause someone's amazing doesn't mean I'll like them. Can you chill about this?"
He really regretted it. At first, he was into Evelyn for her status, not realizing it would cause so much drama.
As for Lisa, he was initially interested because she was the department head's daughter. But now, he genuinely liked her.
Geoffrey looked at Lisa in his arms, his eyes full of affection.
In the end, who was the hunter and who was the prey? Hard to say.
Dermot brought Evelyn home and headed straight to the kitchen to start cooking. Evelyn followed him, offering to help. "You don't have to go all out. We could eat out or hire a chef."
"It's no big deal. I like cooking for you," Dermot said, washing the veggies.
Evelyn was taken aback for a second, then smiled.
Dermot never missed a chance to flirt with her.
