Chapter 179 Hard-earned Tranquility
In Willowbrook, Dermot's worries about Evelyn were unnecessary.
Evelyn, who grew up in the countryside, not only adapted well to this place but loved it very much. It seemed like she was back in the days when she lived in Tara Village.
"Dr. Kyte, this is the accommodation arranged for you by the village. Please let me know if there is anything you are not satisfied with," the village chief said as he led Evelyn to an inn, which was the only inn in the village.
Evelyn looked around the inn. Although it was old, it was cleaned well. "I'm satisfied. Thank you."
"No trouble at all," the village chief shook his head repeatedly. He had heard from higher-ups that this doctor who came to their village was highly skilled, so he wouldn't dare to neglect her.
After Evelyn put away her luggage, the village chief said to her, "There is still no internet access in the village. If you want to make a phone call, you can come to my house. I have a landline there to connect with the outside world."
Evelyn was aware of this information before she came, so she was not surprised.
She had informed the people around her before she came, so they wouldn't worry even if they couldn't contact her. Evelyn felt that there shouldn't be anyone who needed to reach her.
Afterwards, the village chief took Evelyn to the village clinic. For the next three months, she would be treating the villagers there.
"The clinic has basic medicines. If the situation is severe, we will consider seeking treatment outside," the village chief said.
Willingness to seek treatment outside was good proof.
"For meals, you can come to my house. This is how it has been arranged for the previous doctors who came," the village chief said.
Evelyn had no objections to these arrangements.
"No trouble at all. We are very happy that you can come," the village chief, an older man who had been working in the fields all year round, had a dark tan and looked like an ordinary farmer.
Evelyn had a favorable impression of such a person because her grandfather was similar.
"Then I will start working in the afternoon. Please inform the villagers who need medical help that they can come anytime," she said.
The village chief was surprised, "Don't you need a few days of rest?"
In the past, doctors who came to the village would take a few days off before starting work, so the village chief was accustomed to it.
"No need, I'm not tired," she said.
"Okay, I will notify them through the village's loudspeaker later." This was a unique way of notification in rural areas using a loudspeaker.
With a shout, everyone would know.
Afterwards, the village chief left, and Evelyn wandered around the village alone.
Willowbrook is a beautiful village with lush trees and fresh air. Evelyn walked on the path, feeling light and as if she was in a paradise.
Who are Dermot and Natalie? They were long forgotten by her, as she thoroughly enjoyed the hard-earned tranquility.
Evelyn had no idea about the changes happening in Moris City. She thought that by the time she returned to Moris City, Natalie and Dermot should be married. But she certainly couldn't imagine that Natalie didn't marry Dermot, but instead married into the Stanley family.
The heated discussions on the internet were still ongoing, but being in Willowbrook without internet access, Evelyn knew nothing about it.
Natalie's wedding to Oliver Stanley was hastily arranged, almost a week after the announcement of their engagement.
The outside world didn't know the reason behind it, but Dermot and others did.
Only by Natalie marrying into the Stanley family would the Stanley family intervene and help the Barns family. Otherwise, considering the current situation, the Barns family wouldn't be able to hold on for much longer.
At Natalie's wedding, despite the luxurious decorations, one could still tell that it was rushed.
Dermot was invited to attend, not only to save face for the Barns family, but for the sake of the Stanley family's reputation.
In Moris City, the Stanley family was no less prominent than the Doyle family. In terms of heritage, the Stanley family was even stronger than the Doyle family.
the Doyle family started from Dermot's grandfather's generation, but the Stanley family could be considered a hundred-year-old influential family, with no fewer industries under its name than the Doyle family.
At the banquet, Dermot held a glass of wine and listened to the discussions and mostly mocking comments from the guests around him.
Keith and Aidan attended the wedding. Although they were currently in a fierce conflict with the Barns family, the Stanley family had sent them an invitation, and not attending would be a breach of etiquette.
Keith approached and said, "So you're not marrying Natalie, huh? I thought you were serious about marrying her."
"Sure, you can marry her, I won't stop you," Dermot said to him.
"I'm not childhood friends with her, nor have I slept with her, so there's no way I'll marry her."
Dermot's face turned dark, and he said coldly, "You better think carefully before speaking to me, don't forget that you've recently relied on me for something."
Keith sneered, saying, " who said I relied on you? We are only collaborating."
"Is that so?" Dermot said, "Then, guess who would suffer more if we don't cooperate?"
Keith fell silent.
Looking at the losses, he would suffer more, but he wouldn't admit it.
"We agreed to deal with the Barns family, Aidan and I," Keith changed the subject, looking at Natalie Oliver performing the wedding ceremony in the distance.
"But, have you thought about going against the Barns family? Both of your families have been lifelong friends, it's not good to turn your back on them like this."
When Dermot told him yesterday, he was surprised. He thought that with the relationship between the two families, Dermot would never betray the Barns family. But the result was beyond his expectations.
After finishing his drink, Dermot withdrew his gaze from the distance. "If Natalie hadn't harmed her with ill intentions, I wouldn't have randomly targeted the Barns family."
To put it plainly, he was seeking revenge for Evelyn.
Keith stared at him, a smirk forming at the corner of his mouth. "I never expected Dermot to end up like this."
Dermot frowned and looked at him, only to hear Keith continue, "I thought you would never have a weakness, but you do."
When Dermot got married before, Keith had considered investigating the identity of his wife, using it as leverage against Dermot.
However, he found out that Dermot wasn't concerned about that wife at all, so he had to give up. But unexpectedly, after some twists and turns, Dermot fell in love with Evelyn.
Perhaps, destiny had a part to play in it.
"I'm curious to know how much you love her and how much you would sacrifice for her," Keith said with a mischievous smile, with ill intentions. "If I were to kidnap her and threaten you, would you give me the entire Doyle Group?"
As the words fell, a chill emanated from Dermot's whole body. "I advise you not to entertain such thoughts."
"Oh? It seems like you care for her," Keith raised an eyebrow, eager to give it a try.
"If you don't want the Kartland family to become the second Barns family, you better not do that," Dermot looked at him, his words filled with menace.
