Chapter 472 Divorce If There Is No Love
No need to thank me. You would have found out everything sooner or later anyway," Grandpa Doyle said helplessly. If Evelyn hadn't already known so much, he wouldn't have brought it up.
Evelyn felt a bit guilty.
She didn't dare tell him that she had bluffed him. In fact, she hadn't got anything in Colombia; Mr. Hamilton had been hospitalized before she had the chance to ask.
As they spoke in the study, downstairs in the kitchen, Dermot instructed the chef to prepare Evelyn's favorite dishes.
It was at this moment that Benjamin walked into the kitchen, his gaze cold as he looked at Dermot. "Do you have to be with that woman?"
Dermot paused, not turning to look at him, continuing to instruct the chef.
"She's not right for you. I'm looking out for your best interest," Benjamin spoke again.
Only then did Dermot turn around and approach him, speaking softly. "Grandpa said he's already told you about Evelyn's identity."
Benjamin was taken aback but didn't deny it.
"If that's the case, then the so-called issue of identity doesn't exist. What's your reason for objecting?" Dermot's dark eyes bore into Benjamin, as if trying to see right through him.
Benjamin felt uncomfortable under his gaze and coughed awkwardly before saying, "I object because I feel you two are not suitable for each other, it has nothing to do with her identity."
At that, Dermot couldn't help but let out a snort of laughter.
How could Benjamin say such insincere words with a straight face?
"If she's not right for me, she's right for Luke?" Dermot asked coldly, already seeing through Benjamin's little schemes.
Before knowing Evelyn's identity, Dermot could understand Benjamin's opposition; after all, people like him always valued benefits highly, and back then, Evelyn couldn't bring any to this family, so naturally, he wouldn't agree.
But now, with the identity issue out of the way, and considering that Evelyn might even be out of their league once she rejoined her family, Benjamin had no reason to object.
Yet he still did, and coupled with Luke taking a position at Evelyn's company, Dermot had every reason to suspect that the two were up to no good.
When Dermot brought up Luke, Benjamin wasn't surprised; he hadn't intended to hide it. "Luke... is your brother."
Dermot chuckled, he looked at Benjamin as if he was a fool.
"I know the past has made you hate me, but Dermot, you understand how painful it is to live with someone you don't love, right? You should be able to empathize with me," he sighed, seeking Dermot's forgiveness.
Unfortunately, Dermot was not known for being kind-hearted.
Hearing him say this, Dermot struggled to control his urge to lash out. "Not loving someone is grounds for divorce, not for hurting them in the way you did!"
"I admit you're right. I made a mistake in that regard. I was too young and didn't consider the consequences. I never expected your mother would react so drastically," he truly hadn't foreseen Dermot's mother committing suicide.
Dermot didn't care to discern the truth in Benjamin's words. To him, the truth didn't matter.
"Keep Luke away from Evelyn. Whatever plans you have, don't drag her into them," he warned.
Benjamin gave a dry laugh, neither agreeing nor refusing, which was particularly irritating.
