Chapter 496 We're Not Exactly Close
Evelyn almost scoffed at his words, having no interest in arguing. "There's no need for pleasantries, Mr. Kyte. I'm here on business, and I have some questions for you."
"Alright, have a seat and take your time," Blake responded, eager for any opportunity to spend more moments with Evelyn.
Without further ado, Evelyn took a seat on the couch, settling in for what promised to be a lengthy discussion. It was only then that Blake noticed she was not alone. Someone was with her, masked in such a way that prevented him from discerning any features.
Before long, the assistant brought in a spread of drinks, filling the table in front of us. Blake said, with a hint of apprehension in his voice, “I wasn’t sure what you’d like to drink.”
“It’s like you weren’t sure, so you prepared a little bit of everything.” There’s the Kyte family for you—always going big.
Unfortunately for him, Evelyn couldn’t care less about his display of thoughtfulness, and it wasn’t going to earn his way into her good graces.
Picking up a glass of plain water, Evelyn responded indifferently, “Mr. Kyte, there’s no need for formalities. We’re hardly acquainted.”
“Evelyn…”
“Mr. Kyte.” She corrected him firmly, looking up to meet his gaze.
Caught by her piercing eyes, Blake was momentarily speechless. Without uttering a word, he listened as Evelyn began to speak.
“The main reason for my visit today is to ask how much you truly despise me. After years of neglect, you’re now sending people to take me out. If you hated me that much, why not just get rid of me from the start? Why wait until now?”
During her speech, her peripheral vision never left Blake. As expected, upon hearing her words, his expression darkened instantly. “What? Someone’s trying to kill you? Who would want to do that?”
Evelyn thought to herself that he must be unaware.
In that moment, Evelyn wasn’t sure if she should be relieved that her own father harbored no intention of harming her. She guessed she should feel some sense of happiness, but a smile was far from her lips.
“Don’t you know, Mr. Kyte?” said Evelyn with a cold laugh tinged with mockery. “It seems even you aren’t in complete control of the Kyte family.”
Blake regained his composure, already formulating a theory, “If someone has made a move against you, then they can’t be a member of the Kyte family.”
On this, he could be certain. Although he never disclosed Evelyn's true identity, no one in the Kyte family would target her for no reason. If someone was indeed after her, they must have stumbled upon some information.
If they had discovered the connection between him and Evelyn, then the Kyte family would never act. They wouldn’t dare.
“Is that so?” Evelyn sneered, shifting her gaze towards Ella. Capturing the intent, Ella removed her mask.
Blake, locking eyes with Ella, showed a moment of surprise before his brows furrowed. “Ella?”
“It seems you do know her.”
Evelyn continued, “If it weren’t for my vigilance, I might very well be six feet under by now. Mr. Kyte, I believe you owe me an explanation.”
At that moment, what else was there for Blake to misunderstand?
Ella had never fully been part of the Kyte family, but due to her ties with Dora, she often found herself navigating their world. She knew Blake and was aware of her own capabilities, but she never imagined that woman would have the audacity to send her to eliminate Evelyn. It was a truly devious move.
"Sorry, Ms. Kyte," Ella began. She'd always get along with Blake and had been clueless about Evelyn being her daughter until recently.
But would that knowledge have stopped her?
No, it wouldn't.
She owed a debt to Dora that had to be repaid; there was no other choice.
