Chapter 968: This Is His Own Choice
"What are you thinking about?" Dermot asked, sneaking up behind her. "I called you for dinner, but you didn't respond. Weren't you just saying you were hungry?"
Evelyn snapped out of her thoughts. "Oh, nothing. Is dinner ready? Great."
She got up and headed to the dining table.
Dermot had a real talent for cooking. In no time, he had whipped up three dishes and a soup, all looking and smelling amazing.
"Dermot, if you ever go broke, you should open a restaurant. I'd totally support it." Evelyn thought he could definitely run a successful place.
Dermot laughed and served her some food. "How about we team up and maybe cook up something more along the way?"
Evelyn, a bit surprised, pretended not to hear. "These roasted potatoes are really good today. Even though my pieces are bigger than yours, they taste the same, right?"
"Really?" Dermot asked skeptically. It would be a miracle if they tasted the same.
Evelyn nodded. "Yeah, a little difference doesn't matter."
Dermot chuckled and let it go. If she said they tasted the same, then they did. No point in arguing. He cooked for her enjoyment, and as long as she was happy, that was what mattered.
As they ate, Evelyn thought about the news she had seen about the Doyle family and felt a bit worried. "Is everything okay with the Doyle family? It doesn't look good."
"It's fine. Even if there is trouble, it has nothing to do with me," Dermot said casually.
"Aren't you worried the Doyle family might lose its top spot among the ten great families?" Many families, including her father’s, were eyeing that position.
Dermot laughed and looked at Evelyn with affection. "Do you think I care about that?"
"Even if that's true, once I become the head of the Doyle family, do you really think I can't lead them back to the top?"
If Dermot didn't have that ability, why would he even compete for the position of the Doyle family heir?
Evelyn thought it made sense. Right now, the Doyle family didn't have much to do with Dermot. He was just an ordinary worker in the family. Until Randy officially handed over the Doyle family to him, anything that happened to the family had nothing to do with him.
She didn't continue to ask, feeling she was overthinking it.
"Joshua came to see me today," Evelyn suddenly said, looking at Dermot.
Dermot paused slightly with his fork but quickly resumed. "Really? What did he say?"
"He just told me the truth," Evelyn said, looking at Dermot without revealing too much.
Dermot shook his head with a smile. "I never lied to you. You never asked me about Gerald, and besides, you already knew it was me."
Indeed, Dermot had never hidden this from Evelyn. He just hadn't told her that the person who did it was Joshua.
"Yes, I know," Evelyn nodded. She didn't say Dermot had lied to her.
"How did you convince Joshua to help you?" Evelyn asked, curious.
Dermot felt awkward and brushed it off. "Nothing much; I just had some leverage on him. Otherwise, he wouldn't have agreed."
"Oh," Evelyn said thoughtfully and didn't ask further.
After a moment of silence, she suddenly asked, "Do you think I could get Joshua to give up everything and start fresh?"
Dermot put down his fork and saw that Evelyn wasn't joking. His expression became more serious. "Not likely."
Joshua didn't achieve his current position easily. If he were to give up just because of Evelyn's advice, he wouldn't have gotten to where he is today.
"You're right. I talked to him today, but he refused," Evelyn said with a bitter smile. She really didn't want to see him get into trouble.
"Don't worry. You've done your best. It's his choice," Dermot said. He wasn't surprised that Joshua declined. It would have been more surprising if he hadn't.
Evelyn sighed and forced a smile. "Yeah, I know. I'm just saying."
Then neither of them spoke again, and they finished their meal in silence.
After seeing Dermot off, Evelyn went back to her room, exhausted. She lay down on the bed and quickly fell into a deep sleep.
