Chapter 1229: The Driver is Dead
When Evelyn finally cracked her eyes open, it was already three days since the car crash.
Even though Dermot had shielded her, she was still pretty banged up.
Staring at the white ceiling, Evelyn felt a wave of confusion, like she was still piecing things together.
Ruby barged in, planning to check on her, but when she saw Evelyn awake, she burst into happy tears. "Evelyn, you're up!"
"Yeah," Evelyn croaked, her voice raspy as hell.
Ruby quickly handed her some water, letting her take a small sip, which made Evelyn feel a bit better.
She asked Ruby to help her sit up against the headboard, slowly getting her bearings. "Where's Dermot?"
Ruby's face turned grim, but she didn't sugarcoat it. "He's still in the ICU."
Evelyn's face went pale at that.
"Don't worry; your folks got the best docs on it. If he pulls through the next couple of days, he'll be alright," Ruby tried to reassure her.
Evelyn gave a bitter smile, not sure what to say.
If Dermot hadn't yanked the wheel to the right at the last second, she'd be the one in the ICU now.
The truck was gunning straight for her side, but Dermot had swerved, taking the hit himself.
"The driver..."
"He's dead," Ruby said flatly.
Evelyn's face darkened; she didn't buy that it was just an accident. "Who was he?"
"Seemed like he was drunk," Ruby replied. She didn't have all the details, having been busy looking after Evelyn.
Evelyn didn't press further. Right now, the most important thing was waiting for Dermot to wake up. She'd deal with whoever was behind this later.
"Ruby, help me to the ICU to see him," Evelyn said, trying to get up. She wouldn't be at ease until she saw Dermot.
Ruby shook her head. "You just woke up; you can't get out of bed."
"It's not a big deal," Evelyn insisted.
"No way, you can't get out of bed now. Even if you want to see Dermot, you can't go into the ICU," Ruby said firmly, thinking Evelyn needed to rest.
Evelyn felt helpless; without Ruby's help, she couldn't make it to the ICU on her own.
As she was fretting, the door opened again, and Aidan and Niall walked in.
"Evelyn? When did you wake up?" Seeing her awake, both of their eyes lit up. They'd been feeling guilty these past few days because of Evelyn's accident.
Lately, they'd been caught up in their own stuff. Niall was always with Lily, and Aidan had been busy making money after giving all his cash to Phoebe, so they'd kinda neglected Evelyn. They didn't expect something this big to happen.
Seeing them, Evelyn felt like she was seeing her saviors. "I've been awake for a bit. Aidan, can you take me to the ICU?" Evelyn looked at Aidan with pleading eyes.
Aidan frowned, knowing she wanted to see Dermot.
"You just woke up; you shouldn't get out of bed. You need to rest," Aidan refused.
Evelyn wanted to argue, but Aidan cut her off, "Dermot's stable; he should be fine. What you need to do now is get better yourself."
