Chapter 1234: You're Wrong, I'm Not Stupid

Todd hustled in with the doc. After a thorough once-over, it was clear Dermot was on the mend. Dude wasn't out of the woods yet, but at least he wasn't knocking on death's door anymore. Still, bed rest was the name of the game for a while.

Once the docs bounced, Todd handed Dermot a glass of water to wet his whistle. "Mr. Doyle, you can't chow down just yet, so hang tight, alright?"

"Yeah, yeah, you can scram now," Dermot rasped, his voice still a bit rough around the edges.

Todd took off, leaving just Evelyn and Dermot in the room. Finally, they could really see each other.

Both of them were half-sitting, propped up against the headboard. They wanted to get closer but couldn't, so they just shared a wry smile.

"So, what brings you to my crib?" Dermot teased, trying to lighten the heavy vibe hanging between them.

Evelyn dodged the question and shot back, "Why'd you stick your neck out for me? Weren't you scared something might happen to you?"

"I'd rather it happen to me than you." That was Dermot's gut reaction. As long as Evelyn was safe, that was all that mattered to him.

Evelyn bit her lip and stayed quiet.

Dermot's answer was so blunt and sure, no second thoughts. To him, Evelyn was worth more than his own life.

Evelyn couldn't help but wonder, if the roles were reversed, would she have done the same?

She wasn't sure.

She'd always kept her cool in love, never losing her head. She believed no one was more important than herself.

But now, she felt a pang of guilt.

She looked at Dermot and said, "Dermot, what if I can't love you as much as you love me?"

"So what? I wanna protect you, but if it were you, I'd want you to look out for yourself." Dermot looked at her, not bummed out by her words.

He'd rather Evelyn love herself more and stay safe, instead of risking it all for him.

Evelyn's eyes welled up, and she couldn't help but blurt out, "You idiot!"

"Don't cry. I can't even wipe your tears right now," Dermot said, feeling a pang in his chest. Even in the dim light, he could tell Evelyn was tearing up.

Evelyn had been holding back, but Dermot's words broke the dam, and tears streamed down her face.

"You jerk!" Evelyn sobbed and cursed at the same time.

Dermot was floored. Wasn't he trying to make her feel better? Why was she bawling even more?

"Evelyn, I'm sorry, I..."

"You didn't do anything wrong, so why are you apologizing?" Evelyn snapped, thinking he was just a big fool.

Evelyn wiped her eyes and stopped crying. "I'm fine, I just think you're too stupid."

"You're wrong, I'm not stupid," Dermot shot back. He didn't think he was dumb; in fact, he thought he was pretty sharp.

Luckily, he managed to shield Evelyn just in time; otherwise, she would've been the one seriously hurt, and that would've crushed him.

Taking the hit for her, Dermot didn't feel stupid at all.

Evelyn glanced at him, and their eyes locked, showing the deep love they had for each other.

If they could get out of bed, they'd probably be all over each other by now.

Evelyn felt a bit shy, looked away, and switched gears. "The cops said it was an accident. What do you think?"

"No way it was an accident. Someone was gunning for us." Whether it was aimed at him or Evelyn, Dermot wasn't sure yet.
