Chapter 592 No Visit

Evelyn's encounter with Luke was brief and cordial. After exchanging a handful of pleasantries, she promptly took her leave from his office.

As she emerged from the confines of the building, she found herself caught in a moment of hesitation, her phone gripped firmly in her hand. Despite everything, Benjamin was still Dermot's father. Did Dermot know of his condition? And if he did, was he suffering?

In the end, her curiosity won over her reluctance, and she dialed the number.

The phone echoed with a series of rings before it was finally answered. Dermot's voice, weary and strained, greeted her, "Evey."

"Are you alright? You sound worn out," Evelyn voiced her concern.

"It's nothing, just swamped with work at the company. I can't seem to clear it all," he responded. His mind was preoccupied with the thought of wrapping up his work quickly so he could return to Colombia, eager to join forces with Blake and the Sackler family to confront the Roberts family. He hadn't forgotten Evelyn's promise to deal with the Roberts family situation before they could discuss 'them.'

The prospect of resolving the issue with the Roberts family was, to him, synonymous with the day Evelyn would finally be his—how could he not be anxious?

Evelyn, however, was oblivious to his internal turmoil. When she had made that promise, it was merely a tactic to deflect Dermot's feelings, using the Roberts family as a shield.

His tired voice stirred a wave of compassion within her. "Don't rush, take it easy," she advised, her voice soft and soothing. "Todd's there in Columbia, holding the fort; there's no need for you to hurry."

"I know, but…" He paused, collecting his thoughts before adding, "But I want to see you."

Evelyn's grip on her phone tightened, her cheeks flushing a deep shade of pink.

Luckily, she was alone, saving her from any potential embarrassment.

"Enough with the sweet talk, I won't fall for it that easily," Evelyn retorted with feigned severity, her tone stern. Yet, if Dermot had been there, he would have seen the smile playing at the corners of her lips.

But the distance of the call kept him from seeing it.

He chuckled bitterly in response. He was well aware that Evelyn was not easily swayed; their cat-and-mouse game would not have persisted this long without a clear relationship status otherwise.

Taking a deep breath, Dermot spoke earnestly, "I understand. Once I've settled things with the Roberts family, I'll come for your answer. You promised me that, remember? No backing out."

"Afraid of hearing something you don't want?" She found his confidence amusing. Why was he so certain she'd agree to be with him?

"Yes, I am afraid, but I need to hear it," he insisted. He couldn't continue this way, and besides, something told him that the answer would be the one he was hoping for.

Touched by his persistence, Evelyn conceded, "Alright, I'll give you an answer."

Their conversation reminded Evelyn of the original reason she'd called Dermot. "About Benjamin... have you heard?"

A lengthy silence followed on Dermot's end, causing Evelyn to worry. Just as she was about to speak up, he finally responded, his voice slow and deliberate, "Are you referring to his coma? I know."

Evelyn wanted to offer comfort but found herself at a loss for words. Comforting others was not her forte.

"Are you okay? Do you want me to visit him for you?" she asked tentatively, aware that, despite their strained relationship, they were still father and son.

However, Dermot's response was a cold, bitter chuckle. "Visit him? Him?" he scoffed.

"There's no need for you to go. He's not your concern. Even if he dies, it doesn't matter." Dermot wouldn't have visited him in Columbia, let alone ask Evelyn to.

To Dermot, Benjamin had been as good as dead for many years.

Rather than being taken aback by his harsh response, Evelyn felt a sense of relief. "And what about Grandpa?" she inquired.

"I haven't told him yet. Grandpa's health is failing; it’s best to keep it from him for now." Dermot was equally troubled by the situation and intended to keep it hidden, hoping things would resolve as they had in the past, with Benjamin simply fading away.
