Chapter 540 Enough Talking
The Doyle Group's branch in Colombia wasn't exactly making headlines, considering the abundance of hidden talents in the area. The branch wasn't enough to draw public attention.
However, the Roberts family's every move seemed to be under constant surveillance, and it didn't take long for whispers to circulate that the Roberts family had set their sights on the Doyle Group, sparking curiosity about their motives.
To outsiders, it seemed as though the Roberts family was simply looking to expand its empire by acquiring the Doyle Group. But Evelyn knew better; she was sure this was Dora and Lucia's handiwork.
She worried Dermot might not be able to handle it and thought about checking in with a phone call. But in the end, she held back.
She knew him well enough to understand that any offer of help would be staunchly rejected.
It was a matter of pride.
So, she decided to discuss it later with Blake and casually probe if he could lend a hand.
She didn’t expect Blake to offer help but just wanted him to slow down the Roberts family's advances. Their growing power wasn't good news for the Kyte family either.
These thoughts preoccupied her, and she didn't notice that the cab had strayed off course.
"We're here."
The driver's raspy voice eventually announced, pulling her back to reality. She looked up and saw desolation outside the window, instantly feeling that something was off.
She had an appointment to meet Kevin at a restaurant downtown, and it definitely wasn't located in a desolate area.
"Where are we?" she asked, but the driver didn't turn around, preventing her from seeing his face.
"Your final stop," came the hoarse reply as the driver exited the vehicle and opened the rear door.
Evelyn didn't resist being pulled from the car because the confined space made it hard to defend herself.
After the gala just last night, someone was already making a move on her. Dora and her daughter were certainly not wasting any time.
As she glanced at her assailant, they hadn’t clashed yet, but she could tell he wouldn't be easy to handle.
She had learned her lessons in Colombia, knowing true masters were numerous here, and she was far from invincible.
Her first instinct was to stall. Meanwhile, she had already dialed a number on her phone secretly under the cover of her bag. But she had no clue who she had called.
"Hey, don't do anything rash. Murder is still illegal, and you're so young. Do you really want to throw your life away?" she tried to reason with him.
But the man didn't have time for chit-chat and lunged at her.
Evelyn sighed, "Ah, can't we talk this out? Why the haste?"
"Enough talk," he retorted.
Resigned, Evelyn knew she wasn't usually one to babble, but if she didn't buy some time, today might genuinely be her last.
She didn't resort to a head-on confrontation. Just a few exchanged moves had confirmed her suspicion. She really was no match for her adversary.
Dora had clearly grown smarter. Knowing that Evelyn had mastered a few self-defense moves, she and her mother had shelled out serious cash to hire professionals to deal with her instead of taking her on directly. They were no longer the brainless types she'd encountered before.
Evelyn wasn't sure who exactly was on the receiving end of her call. She just prayed that they'd realize she was in deep trouble and rush over with backup immediately. Otherwise, she would be done for today.
Meanwhile, Kevin picked up Evelyn's call and thought she wanted to say something. But upon answering, he was met with silence, which he found rather odd.
Evelyn didn’t have her speakerphone on. Even though Kevin listened carefully, all he could make out were faint rustling sounds, leaving him clueless about her situation.
Nonetheless, something told him that something was off.
