Chapter 639 Grass Is Greener
Wade harbored a certain level of concern for Evelyn, yet her reticence held him back from prying further. His worry, however, bubbled to the surface, breaking the silence that had settled between them.
"Evelyn, do you truly not consider me in your thoughts?" Wade ventured, his voice tinged with a hint of desperation. "I won't claim to be extraordinary, but I'm not entirely without merit either." He felt compelled to try once more, to breach the wall of indifference she had erected.
Evelyn, upon hearing his plea, felt a headache brewing. She had hoped that her previous dismissal of his advances would have quelled his intentions.
"Wade, I assure you, my thoughts are not straying in that direction," she responded, her tone firm. Evelyn was adamant that their relationship should not extend beyond the boundaries of their senior-junior sibling bond.
She was content with the status quo, seeing no need for alterations. The thought of a romantic entanglement with Wade, which could potentially end in estrangement, was a risk she was unwilling to take.
Despite his second rejection, Wade's temper remained in check. Oddly, he had anticipated this response.
"That's fine, I'm not in any rush," he assured her, a resigned smile on his face. "I just hope that when you do contemplate such matters, I'll be the first one you consider. I'm merely waiting in line."
Evelyn, at a loss for words, offered him a silent smile in response.
After a brief pause, she decided it was time to address the situation with Hubert. Rising from her seat, she sought out Blake upstairs, intending to lead him to the garden for a private discussion.Meanwhile, in a nearby pavilion, Lucia and Hubert stood side by side."Hubert, what was the meaning behind your actions today? Why did you make such declarations in front of my father?" Lucia questioned, her tone laced with irritation.Hubert, aware of her thoughts, remained unperturbed. "Lucia, don't you want to marry me?"
"Hubert, I haven't made up my mind yet," Lucia responded, intending to deflect his question as she had done previously, evading a definitive answer.Hubert's gaze hardened slightly. Normally, he would have let the matter slide, but today was different."What are you still contemplating? Do you harbor any doubts? I promised I would treat you well," he implored, his eyes still brimming with affection.Lucia seethed internally. Who asked you to treat me well? I don't want to marry you.Yet, she kept these thoughts to herself, primarily due to her fear of ending up alone if she failed to secure Wade and lost Hubert in the process. She was determined not to let that happen, and so, she held onto Hubert."Hubert, you said you wouldn't pressure me. I want to enjoy my freedom for a few more years," Lucia retorted, puzzled by Hubert's uncharacteristic persistence.Hubert, desperate for a definitive answer, was taken aback by her words. His face darkened, his displeasure evident. "Lucia, don't take me for a fool.""Hubert...""Are you still unsatisfied? I saw the look on Wade's face," he spat out, his anger palpable.Lucia was taken aback by his outburst, momentarily at a loss for words."Hubert, I didn't mean it that way. I just want to spend more time with my parents at home for a few more years," Lucia insisted, sticking to her story, regardless of whether Hubert believed her or not.She knew that she needed to reassure Hubert today, or he would continue to harbor doubts."Do you think I'll believe that?" Hubert scoffed, his skepticism apparent.Seeing his reaction, Lucia felt a wave of panic wash over her. In a sudden move, she stepped forward and hugged Hubert. "Hubert, I really like you, please don't be like this."Caught off guard by her sudden display of affection, Hubert was momentarily stunned. However, it wasn't Lucia's actions that surprised him, but the words Evelyn had shared with him earlier. It seemed she had foreseen everything.
