Chapter 571 I Think You're Amazing
A solemn hush fell over the room, leaving Dermot in its wake. Unfamiliar with such intense scrutiny, he lapsed into silence, his thoughts a whirlwind.
After what felt like an eternity, he finally met Evelyn's gaze and declared with heartfelt sincerity, "I suppose it's your unwavering dedication, your inner strength, your everything."
The first time Dermot laid eyes on Evelyn, she was on the brink of saving a patient's life. The patient, however, was skeptical and demanded a guarantee from the hospital director.
Dermot had stepped forward then, vouching for Evelyn. It was intended as a favor, as he was also there for a surgery that Evelyn was to perform.
But upon meeting her, he found his heart pounding in a rhythm he couldn't control.
At that moment, he brushed it off, never imagining he would fall for this woman.
It was only through their increasing interactions and his growing concern for Evelyn that he came to realize he had been smitten with her from the very beginning.
"I'm not as great as you think," Evelyn protested, worried that Dermot was placing her on an undeserved pedestal.
"That doesn't matter. It's enough that I think you're wonderful," he replied, his honesty radiating from him. To Dermot, Evelyn was the epitome of perfection.
Evelyn fell silent, her mind awash with thoughts.
In an attempt to lighten the atmosphere, Dermot joked, "This sudden question—does it mean you're considering being my girlfriend again?"
He had made a mistake in the past, believing he was acting in Evelyn's best interest, but instead, he had hurt her.
If Evelyn would grant him another chance, Dermot swore never to deceive her again.
Indeed, Evelyn was considering it. She had feelings for Dermot, after all. Continuing this standoff seemed pointless.
However, considering she hadn't yet convinced Blake to accept Dermot, she replied, "Let's wait until I resolve the situation with the Roberts family back in Columbia. If we don't settle things with them, no one will recognize your capabilities."
Once the issue with the Roberts family was sorted, she could use the opportunity to speak highly of Dermot to Blake, showcasing his capabilities.
She wasn't overly concerned about Blake's approval. Her worry was that insisting on being with Dermot might provoke Blake's wrath. If he acted out against Dermot, the consequences could be dire.
With these thoughts in mind, she began to understand why Dermot hadn't informed her about Benjamin's return earlier, probably due to similar concerns.
"Alright," Dermot responded with a smile, comforted by Evelyn's definitive answer. Having a clear path ahead was a relief compared to his previous state of uncertainty.
Their conversation concluded when Evelyn received a call from Blake, who was evidently worried because she hadn't returned home yet.
"You should head back, it's getting late," Dermot suggested, taking the initiative. As much as he wanted her to stay, he knew better than to rush things.
Hope was within his grasp. There was no need for haste.
Evelyn rose to her feet, "You too. Get some rest. Tomorrow... I don't have much planned. I'll probably arrange to take Ruby away, maybe the day after tomorrow."
"Okay," Dermot replied simply. "I'll accompany you the day after tomorrow."
Evelyn looked at him, hesitated, but then spoke. "You don't need to. With Blake around, Craig can't do much."
If Dermot went, it would signify the end of his friendship with Craig.
Even though she didn't particularly like Craig, she didn't want Dermot and him to fall out. After all, Craig was his brother.
"It doesn't matter. Even if I don’t go, he'll know everything," Dermot said with a wry smile. Craig was no fool. If Ruby was taken away, he'd quickly catch on and would resent Dermot all the same.
Seeing his resolve, Evelyn didn't press the matter and left Dermot's place.
