Chapter 1231: I Don't Believe It
Evelyn wasn't sweating the small stuff; she was just freaked out about Dermot. Ruby slurped her chicken soup. "Your mom's being super nice to you," she said, all casual-like. "Probably feels guilty or something."
Evelyn shook her head. "I don't need her to make it up to me. What's done is done."
"That's how you see it, but she might not be on the same page," Ruby said, still enjoying her soup.
Evelyn rolled her eyes. "Is it good?"
"Yeah, it's good," Ruby nodded. "Wanna try some?"
"Nah, I'm good," Evelyn shook her head. Being a doc, she knew to stick to the medical advice.
Ruby polished off another bowl. "So, what do you need my help with?"
Even though Evelyn hadn't said a word, Ruby could tell she needed something.
Evelyn grinned. "Can you snag me a wheelchair and take me to see Dermot?"
"Knew it!" Ruby rolled her eyes. She'd already figured out what Evelyn was gonna ask.
"Quit yapping. Just tell me if you're in or not," Evelyn said bluntly. With their years of friendship, she figured Ruby wouldn't bail.
Ruby stared at her for a sec before giving in. "Alright, I'll get it."
"That's more like it. Thanks, you're the best," Evelyn smiled, feeling way better knowing she'd get to see Dermot.
Ruby just rolled her eyes again.
She left and came back with a wheelchair. "Let's roll. I'll take you to him."
She knew Evelyn too well. If she didn't see Dermot tonight, she wouldn't chill. So, better to just take her.
With some effort, Ruby got Evelyn settled in the wheelchair and pushed her towards the ICU.
At the ICU, they ran into Todd at the door.
"Ms. Kyte," Todd looked surprised to see her.
His eyes landed on the wheelchair, and he got it right away. "Mr. Doyle's stable. You should get some rest."
"I know. I just need to see him." Everyone kept telling her to rest, but Dermot was in this mess because he protected her. How could she rest?
Ruby pushed her to the ICU door. The window was too high, so Evelyn couldn't see squat from the wheelchair.
"Ruby, help me up," she insisted.
Ruby sighed but helped her stand to peek inside.
Dermot was still hooked up to an oxygen mask, but the monitors showed he was stable.
Evelyn let out a breath and sat back down.
"Todd, can you fill me in? Who got us to the hospital?" She hadn't asked before, but now that Dermot was stable, she needed to know.
Todd didn't hold back. "A passerby brought you and Mr. Doyle here. The driver who caused the crash died on the spot. They said it was a DUI, calling it an accident for now."
"DUI? I don't buy it," Evelyn scoffed.
"Don't worry. I've got someone digging into it. We'll find out what really went down," Todd said. He didn't think it was an accident either, so even though Dermot was still out, he was already on it.
