Chapter 28
After the auction followed the inevitable yet tiresome socializing. Many eager eyes were on Evelyn. After all, she was not only Aidan's sister, but also the last disciple of Mr. Smith.
Being with her, then there would be just one step away from success.
Evelyn knew nothing about these intentions. She felt rather gloomy as Dermot had successfully bid for her painting.
She shouldn't have bothered who bought it. It was for charity. Yet the buyer being Dermot disgusted her.
She couldn't help but wonder, 'Did that man even understand art?’
'Was he going to just gift it to Cassie again?'
She somewhat regretted donating this particular painting for tonight. If she had known, she would have chosen another.
With these thoughts in mind, she hid herself in a corner with a glass of wine. There she spotted Aidan talking with ease in the distance.
She was lit up a little bit, thinking, 'He's really starting to look the part of a success story.'
Lost in her thoughts, someone approached her. "Hello, miss. I'm Kenny Barns. What about making a new friend?"
Evelyn glanced up. It was a portly, greasy-looking man.
She frowned, especially when seeing his eyes fixed on her bluntly. It just creeped her out.
She stood up. "Sorry, I'm not into this."
With that, she turned away, ending the conversation.
However, Kenny was not satisfied with the ending. He immediately stood in her way. "Ms. Kyte, here's a kind reminder. Moris City is vast, and Aidan may not always be able to protect you. It's wise to be cautious of your words."
As he spoke, Evelyn noticed several people surrounding her. Clearly, this rotund man had prepared for this.
Evelyn set down her glass and scanned the venue. She didn't spot Aidan. He must have been taken away by these goons on some pretext.
She didn't have to worry about Aidan's safety anyway. Given his standing at that time, few would dare make trouble for him.
She turned back to Kenny, smiled kindly. "Mr. Barns, I'm not in the mood to make a scene tonight. Call off your goons. Don't say I didn't warn you."
After all, it was a charity banquet, and she didn't want to spoil the atmosphere here.
However, Kenny didn't take her words seriously. Instead, her response seemed to further fuel his enthusiasm. "You're really brave. I admire that.
"I wonder if you are brazen in bed as well. I would find that out later," he sneered.
Instantly, Evelyn's face darkened, and her fists clenched. She was about to send this man to hell with a single punch in the next second.
"Mr. Barns, it's a bit improper in public, isn't it?"
Just then, an amused and slightly rakish voice popped up. In a blink, a man appeared by Evelyn's side.
Evelyn had encountered numerous attractive men before. Yet this time, she could feel her heart skipped a beat upon seeing this person.
He was incredibly handsome.
So far, the most handsome man Evelyn had known was Dermot. This man was just as captivating, but in a different way.
While Dermot was icy cold, this man seemed to be a little delicate.
"Keith!" Kenny gritted his teeth. "I didn't know you were the type to meddle in other people's business."
"Why? It's called assisting a damsel in distress. I'm clearly just trying to be chivalrous," As he said it, he even cocked an eyebrow at Evelyn.
Evelyn didn't know what to say.
No need for that.
She didn't take Kenny and his goons seriously to begin with.
"What if I insist on taking her with me? You're making an enemy of the Barns family." Kenny stared at Evelyn, with a wicked flame burning in his eyes.
He didn't care who Evelyn was. If she was pretty, he got to have her.
