Chapter 1160: She Should Take a Step Forward
Ruby's eyes went wide, "Wait, you've never had a girlfriend?"
Alex scratched his head, looking a bit sheepish. "Yeah, I was a chubby kid. Who'd wanna date me? Then work got crazy busy, and I just never had the time."
If he hadn't met Ruby, he probably wouldn't even be thinking about a girlfriend now. It just wasn't on his radar.
"So, why the sudden interest in having a girlfriend now?" Ruby asked, puzzled. It was weird for someone always buried in work to suddenly want a relationship.
Alex took a deep breath, locking eyes with her. "Honestly, I knew about you and Craig from the start. I know he's done some shady stuff, and I didn't want you getting hurt. But the more time we spent together, the more I realized I really liked you. So, here I am, finally telling you."
Ruby didn't say anything right away, but she believed him. When they first met, she thought it was odd. She never saw herself as the type to spark love at first sight.
"Craig..."
"Yeah, back in Moris City, he ran the black market. Most of his business was illegal. Now he's in Golombia, and a lot of it's gone legit. If he stays clean, there's not much I can do. But don't worry," Alex assured her.
Of course, if Craig slipped back into his old ways, Alex wouldn't let it slide.
Ruby rolled her eyes. "I'm not worried. If he breaks the law, you can arrest him. It's got nothing to do with me."
"Glad you see it that way." Alex was relieved Ruby wasn't still hung up on Craig.
The conversation had drifted. Alex scratched his head. "Ruby, you still haven't answered if you wanna be my girlfriend."
"You're always so busy. Even if I say yes, you probably won't have time for me." Ruby liked her independence, but having a boyfriend meant wanting someone around.
Alex got serious. "Don't worry, I'll make time. From now on, all my free time and holidays are yours."
He meant it, and Ruby could see that. She felt a bit moved. "You should think it through. I'm not as great as you think."
"I've thought it through." If he hadn't, he wouldn't be confessing now.
Ruby smiled. "Then I agree."
Alex was stunned for a second, then his face lit up with a huge grin. "Ruby, I promise I won't let you get hurt again."
He pulled her into a hug, feeling content just holding her.
Ruby leaned into him, feeling his warmth, but a part of her was still unsure.
Could Alex really make her happy?
She was anxious inside, but she knew she had to take a chance.
When they walked back to the front garden, hand in hand, Evelyn noticed right away.
Evelyn grinned and nudged Dermot. "Told ya, those two are a thing now."
Dermot followed her gaze and saw Alex and Ruby holding hands. He got it then too.
