Chapter 829 I'm Not Stupid
"The police station's right here. Thanks for the ride, Mr. Doyle," Evelyn said, dodging Dermot's question.
Why should she care if he was handsome? She had no interest in answering such a pointless question.
The car stopped, and Dermot, seeing she didn't respond, just smiled. "Go ahead."
Evelyn quickly got out and hurried toward the police station as if she were afraid Dermot might pull her back if she walked any slower.
Dermot chuckled to himself, pondering, 'Am I really that intimidating?'
Half an hour later, Evelyn walked out of the police station. Just as she was about to hail a cab to meet Joshua at the restaurant, she saw Dermot still waiting at the entrance.
"Why are you still here?" Evelyn asked. She thought, 'Is Dermot planning to join me for dinner? That wouldn't be appropriate.'
"Aren't you meeting Joshua for dinner? I'll give you a ride," Dermot said, his face devoid of any extra expression, making it hard for Evelyn to guess what he was thinking.
Evelyn stared at him for a moment, then laughed. "You really want to give me a ride?"
"Yeah." Dermot nodded. "Don't worry, I won't crash your dinner. I'll just drop you off."
"Why?" Evelyn was puzzled. Dermot hated Joshua, yet now he wanted to drive her to dinner with him. What was his angle?
"No reason. I like you, so I won't let you take a cab." He figured it was the least he could do to ensure her safety.
Hearing him say he liked her, Evelyn paused, her expression complicated. She called, "Dermot."
"Get in the car. Don't be late; it's rude to keep him waiting." It pained Dermot to say that, but he had brought it on himself.
Evelyn didn't argue and got into the car. She knew that once he made up his mind, he could not change it, so why waste time?
In the car, neither of them spoke.
As they neared the restaurant, Dermot couldn't hold back. "Otis isn't a good guy. Don't get too close to him."
"Okay." Evelyn nodded, for once not arguing.
Dermot glanced at her, and Evelyn, catching his look, said, "I'm not stupid. Otis' sudden approach must have a reason. I won't fall for it."
Dermot added, "But he's part of the Doyle family and might inherit it." After all, the outside world had high hopes for Gerald. Once he inherited the Doyle family, it would be just a matter of time before Otis took over.
Evelyn rolled her eyes. "Do you think I care about that? Do you think I care if he will inherit the Doyle family?"
She wasn't like Natalie, who fawned over people because of their status. She couldn't do that.
"True." Dermot nodded, just wanting to confirm.
The car stopped at the restaurant entrance. Evelyn was about to get out but turned to Dermot. "You really don't have to do all this. Since you've decided to secure the Doyle family inheritance, focus on that."
"Don't worry. I won't be distracted," Dermot replied, which implied he intended to both control the Doyle family and pursue Evelyn.
