Chapter 240 What's With That Look in Your Eyes?
Evelyn leaned against the door, listening to Phoebe's knocking. Even after the person had left, she remained in the same spot, not moving for a long time.
Aidan...
Evelyn tried hard not to think about what Phoebe had said. She told that it was all fake, that Aidan only felt a normal familial love for her, without any other emotions involved.
Her heart couldn't calm down.
Aidan's kindness towards her, the restraint in his eyes. In this moment, Evelyn realized that all the signs had been there, but she had never considered them before, so she never noticed.
And now, after being ruthlessly exposed, she realized that she couldn't deceive any longer.
She slowly crouched down, burying her head in her chest, feeling a sudden pain in her heart.
Outside the door, Dermot appeared.
He hadn't seen the light in Evelyn's room downstairs for a long time, and he was worried about her safety. So, he came upstairs to check on her and happened to hear Phoebe's conversation.
He did not come out to stop Phoebe because in his view, Evelyn had to know sooner or later, and there was nothing wrong with knowing now.
After Phoebe left, he came to Evelyn's door, just standing there without knocking. He knew that Evelyn must be feeling terrible and there was nothing he could do.
All the comfort was useless. Evelyn could only get through this on her own.
Helplessly, he leaned against the door and subconsciously thought of lighting a cigarette.
He bitterly smiled. It seemed like he had been smoking more frequently lately...
When he was hesitating whether to light the cigarette or put it back, the door opened. Dermot didn't even have time to hide and came face-to-face with Evelyn who walked out.
"What are you doing here?" Evelyn looked at him and frowned. Wasn't this man supposed to have left a long time ago?
As if realizing something, Evelyn's face turned ugly, "Did you hear everything?"
"Evey..." Dermot wanted to explain but seeing her teary eyes, he knew that anything he said would be pointless.
"What's with that look in your eyes? Pitying me?" Evelyn looked at Dermot, not understanding why he was looking at her like that.
Putting aside whether Aidan liked her or not, even if it were true, what was there to pity?
"No, I'm just worried about you." Dermot said, afraid that Evelyn couldn't accept it.
At first, Evelyn couldn't accept it, but she calmed down. She couldn't just believe Phoebe's one-sided words, right? Who knew if what she said was true or not?
So she decided to go out and find Aidan, to ask for clarity.
If it was true...then she would make it clear to Aidan and let him abandon such thoughts. They were siblings, even if they didn't share blood, they would always be just siblings.
Evelyn waved her hand, not in the mood to say anything to Dermot at "No need, you can go back."
"Where are you going?" Dermot hurriedly asked, following her.
"I have something to do, I need to go out." Evelyn said, entering the elevator, with Dermot following closely behind.
Inside the elevator, Dermot guessed what she was going to do, but he didn't ask, "Alright, if you need anything, call me, I'll be here."
Evelyn glanced at him and didn't say anything.
When the elevator reached the first floor, Evelyn walked out of the community, hailed a taxi, and left, not giving Dermot a chance to offer her a ride.
