Chapter 538 No Time for Love
Dermot nodded. He was far more composed than Evelyn in her worries.
That's just the way he was—always ready to face whatever came his way, confident that there would always be a solution to every problem.
He guided Evelyn to sit on the couch and handed her the ointment. "At least finish applying this for me."
Without a word, Evelyn continued to apply the ointment. A silence fell over the living room.
Before long, she finished her task and stood to leave. "You should rest at home for a few days."
"You’re leaving?" Dermot asked.
She nodded. "It's getting late. I should head back."
Blake wasn't keen on her maintaining contact with Dermot, and if she returned late, it might only worsen Blake’s disdain toward Dermot.
"Evey."
Dermot called out, and his gaze was so intense that she could hardly look away from him. "You still care about me, don't you?"
Evelyn stayed silent. Dermot had not expected her to answer. He pressed on, "I know I'm quite weak now. Will you wait for me?"
"Wait for you?" Evelyn asked, puzzled by what he meant.
"Wait for me to be stronger. I'm not worthy of you right now. Not yet." A bitter smile crossed his face. He wished he could be with her now but knew it was too much to ask.
So, he was asking for time.
Evelyn couldn't help but laugh softly, a touch of resignation in her voice. "Dermot, after all this time, what kind of person do you think I am?"
Did she care about those things?
"I know you don't care, but I don't want you to suffer any grievances, to be the subject of gossip." He couldn't bear others speaking ill of Evelyn behind her back or the thought of being unable to protect her.
His sincerity was clear, and she believed he was truthful in that moment.
But...
She remained silent for a while before speaking, “I'm not concerned about family background. If I like you, it doesn't matter who you are. I'll like you just the same.”
"Do you like me, then?" Dermot asked, seizing the opportunity.
Evelyn rolled her eyes, avoiding the question. "I don't want to think about that now. I'm still settling my roots in Columbia, getting everything in place. I have a lot to take care of."
"I understand," Dermot replied. He felt the same. He had his own battles to fight.
"So, let's not talk about feelings for now. Let's focus on getting a solid footing here in Columbia first. Afterwards, we can discuss everything else. Is that okay with you?" Evelyn asked him.
It would've been a lie for Evelyn to say she didn't like Dermot.
Yet, after a brief taste of romance with him, the thought of committing to a relationship filled Evelyn with trepidation.
She feared that emotions would slow her pursuit of career success. She preferred to steer clear of romantic entanglements until her business was off the ground and stable.
Dermot felt a twinge of disappointment. Evelyn hadn't responded directly to his question. However, it didn't bother him much as he understood her stance well enough.
When they were both on solid ground, she would still be open to being with him.
"Okay," Dermot agreed, resolved not to give up at the first sign of hope.
Evelyn smiled, finding comfort in their mutual understanding. They would both work hard and meet at the summit of their success.
"So... I guess I'll head out?" Evelyn said, gesturing towards the door, ready to make her exit.
Although he was reluctant to see her go, Dermot didn't try to stop her. She had made her intentions quite clear.
"If Lucia tries to mess with you again, let me know. I’ll set her straight," Dermot offered.
Evelyn shook her head. "Best if you steer clear of her for now. She holds grudges."
"I’m one of the Kyte family, and she wouldn’t dare mess with me. She'll just take her anger out on you instead. You should watch out. She's likely to cause you trouble during this period."
Lucia knew exactly who could help her hurt Dermot. After all, being a member of the Kyte family meant she had the resources to find the right people to cause trouble with ease.
At this moment, Dermot was in danger because Lucia could strike at any time.
