Chapter 1277: Can I Help for a Lifetime

Jacob got the gist of what she was saying, but he couldn't just sit around and do nothing.

"Think of this cash as a loan from me. Make her write her own IOU," Evelyn decided.

Jacob was a bit thrown off and felt uneasy. "But Emily's pregnant and can't work."

"She can pay it back little by little. But she has to pay it back, and you and Aunt Arianna can't bail her out." Evelyn wanted Emily to learn the value of money; otherwise, she'd just blow it without a second thought.

Jacob got her point and, without much fuss, agreed. "Alright."

Then, Jacob called up Arianna and passed on Evelyn's exact words, telling her to get Emily to write the IOU herself.

Arianna wasn't thrilled to hear this, but Jacob cut to the chase, "If you don't want to do it, then let her deal with it on her own. I'm done with her drama!"

Hearing Jacob say this, Arianna didn't dare argue and went to find Emily right after hanging up.

"Thanks, Evelyn." After hanging up, Jacob didn't know what else to say.

Evelyn just smiled, brushing it off. "Uncle Jacob, you'll always be my uncle. It's just a small favor; no need to be so formal with me."

"Okay." Jacob nodded and asked, "What do you want to eat tonight? I'll whip something up for you."

"Just make the dishes Grandpa used to make. I haven't had them in ages, and I really miss them," Evelyn said, her eyes distant with a touch of nostalgia.

Even though they were the simplest dishes, to Evelyn, they were a rare treat.

As evening rolled in, Dermot wheeled Henry back home. They were crashing at Jacob's place for the night and heading back to Moris City the next day.

Jacob was stoked about this. He even had a few drinks with Dermot, and the vibe was pretty chill.

When Arianna got back, they had already finished eating, but no one cared. She handed the IOU to Evelyn, still a bit miffed.

"Evelyn, Emily is your cousin after all. Now that you're loaded, do you really need to do this?" Arianna still hoped Evelyn would just hand over the money without the IOU hassle.

Evelyn took the IOU and smiled at Arianna. "Aunt Arianna, this amount of money is nothing to me, and I could give it to you straight up."

"Really?"

"But have you thought about it? I can help her once, but can I help her forever?" Evelyn asked.

Arianna went quiet, and Evelyn continued, "Emily's not a kid anymore. Do you want her to be like this forever?"

"You and Uncle Jacob should be enjoying life now, but because of her, you're still tied down. Do you really want to spend the rest of your days like this?" Evelyn asked.

This time, Arianna was speechless.

Of course, she didn't want to worry about Emily forever. She wanted to enjoy some peace and quiet.

But Emily was her only daughter. How could she not spoil her?

Evelyn pressed on, "Aunt Arianna, I want to get this money back to help Emily understand how hard it is to earn it and push her to start working for herself instead of always leaning on you. If you don't want to keep living like this, then stop supporting her financially—it's not good for her."

After saying this, Evelyn turned and left the living room, heading back to her room. Whether Arianna could get it was up to her.
