Chapter 528 Has She Lost Her Mind
Evelyn gracefully rose from her seat and made her way to the stage. The spotlight followed her every step, casting a radiant glow on her as she moved. Her footsteps were the only sound in the hushed venue.
She appeared dazzling, confident, and utterly stunning. Despite the knowledge that Evelyn had been divorced, the audience couldn't help but be captivated by her presence at that moment.
Lucia, seething with rage, couldn't fathom how this seemingly country-raised woman could command such a presence. It was as if she were the true heiress of the Kyte family.
“Just wait! When she fails to play, I'll have my chance to laugh at her unabashedly.” Lucia thought, her excitement growing.
Evelyn reached the piano and sat down, yet she didn't immediately begin to play.
Lucia's eyes gleamed with malice. She thought, 'I knew it! This woman couldn't possibly know how to play. Raised in the countryside, she surely hadn't been around pianos much.'
Lucia exchanged a knowing look with her friends, signaling them to tease Evelyn. One of them spoke up deliberately, "Evelyn, why aren't you playing? Could it be that you don't know how?"
"Oh dear, if you couldn't play, you should've said so earlier. Why put on a show and step up on the stage?"
The room's energy shifted as people now held a hint of suspicion and derision.
“This Lady of the Kyte family, although doted on by Blake, might be a tad too eager for the spotlight,” they thought. “If she truly couldn't play, why make such a scene?”
"I'm sorry, everyone. My sister has only just returned to the Kyte family, so..." Lucia interjected, feigning a need to cover for Evelyn.
However, her words unintentionally reminded everyone of Evelyn's humble origins, and the mockery began.
"She really is from the countryside and utterly clueless about high society."
“That’s right. She might not have seen a piano much, yet she wants to be on stage. She doesn’t care about the Kyte family’s reputation at all.”
"And she dares to compete with Lucia? She can't hold a candle to Lucia, not by a long shot."
The rumor mill was abuzz. In their eyes, Lucia wasn't exactly exceptional, but at least she came from genuine wealth and was a jack-of-all-trades—piano, chess, literature, and painting, she mastered them all.
In contrast, Evelyn's shortcomings were glaringly obvious. Her audacity to show off when she lacked talent was nothing short of laughable.
Basking in the swirl of gossip, Lucia's ego swelled with satisfaction. “That’s right. Why should Evelyn even dare to compete with me?”
As these thoughts circled in her head, Lucia lifted her gaze to Evelyn once more. She was about to make another snide remark when she caught Evelyn looking straight at her.
They locked eyes across the room.
Evelyn was smiling, but that smile sent a shiver down Lucia's spine.
'What is she smiling at? Has she lost her mind?'
During Lucia's bemused silence, Evelyn made her move. Her delicate fingers touched the black piano keys, and then Lucia struggled to keep up with the blazing speed of her playing.
It was unbelievably fast.
By the time the crowd realized what was happening, their faces were all painted with shock.
Anyone present at that high-society gala could recognize that Evelyn was playing Rachmaninoff's “Piano Concerto No. 3”, a piece notoriously difficult to execute.
They watched Evelyn, poised and composed, sitting at the piano. They felt like they were fools for doubting her. They shouldn't have assumed that she couldn’t play the piano.
If this didn't count as knowing how to play, then nobody in the room would dare claim they could.
Soon enough, as the piece came to an end, Evelyn got up and stepped down the stage before the audience could even process the performance.
She walked straight up to Lucia, smiling, "So, sister, did you enjoy the piece?"
Lucia opened her mouth, but no words came out.
It was true. She didn’t know what to say, and her cheeks burned with embarrassment.
