Chapter 1146: I Owe You an Apology

Dermot shot Evelyn a sly grin from across the table. "Grandpa, Evelyn's my pick. No way I'm letting her go that easy."

Henry let out a booming laugh, "You did this to yourself, kid. If you’d listened to me back then, we wouldn’t be in this mess."

After all the drama, Dermot had only managed to make Evelyn his girlfriend again. She used to be his wife, though.

Feeling a bit awkward, Dermot rubbed his nose. "Just goes to show, Evelyn and I are meant to be. No matter what, we always find our way back to each other."

Henry kept quiet, thinking, 'Believe what you want, kid. You’d never admit you're being a fool anyway.'

After a bit more chatting, Henry waved Dermot off to the kitchen. "Go help out in the kitchen. I need a private word with Evelyn."

"Alright, but don’t give Evelyn a hard time," Dermot said.

Henry shot him a look and snapped, "When have I ever treated her badly?"

When Evelyn first joined the Doyle family, Dermot didn’t give her the time of day. It was Henry who had her back, giving her two peaceful years.

Things didn’t turn out great, but no one could say Henry hadn’t been there for Evelyn.

Dermot was just messing around and quickly got up to head to the kitchen.

Once he was gone, Henry turned to Evelyn. "Evelyn, are you really serious about Dermot? Or are you just giving in because you’re tired of him bugging you?"

He was worried Evelyn didn’t truly like Dermot, which would mean they were doomed from the start.

"Henry, don’t worry. I’m serious. I’ve thought it through," Evelyn replied.

Hearing this, Henry smiled, patted Evelyn’s hand, and said happily, "Good, that’s good."

"I'm all Dermot's got now. I just worry about him after I'm gone. I really hope you two can stick together. At least he won’t be so lonely. I’m relieved to have you by his side now."

Evelyn felt a pang in her heart and looked at the gray-haired Henry in front of her, trying to comfort him, "Henry, don’t worry. You’ll live a long life."

"What's so great about living long? As long as Dermot isn’t lonely in the future, I’ll be happy." So, even if Henry died now, he wouldn’t have any regrets.

Of course, if he could see Dermot get married, that would be even better.

Evelyn let the subject drop. It was too heavy, and dwelling on it would only make both her and Henry feel worse.

Henry didn’t continue either. Instead, he switched gears and said to Evelyn, "Evelyn, there’s something I’ve always wanted to apologize for."

Evelyn was taken aback. "Henry, what are you talking about?"

"Back then, I pushed you and Dermot to get married, not because I really admired you, but because I knew about your family background. I thought that if Dermot married you, it would help the Doyle family grow stronger when you went back to Golombia."

Henry sighed and went on, "Even later, I always hoped you and Dermot would remarry with that same purpose in mind, not because I genuinely wanted the best for you."

Now that Henry was saying this, even he felt ashamed of himself.

Back then, he had actually thought of using a young girl to advance the Doyle family. It was truly despicable.
