Chapter 513 You Still Want Me to Work For You
He wasn't content with this disparity, so over the years, he worked tirelessly to surpass Dermot, to prove he was every bit as good.
He never succeeded, and to this day he remains nothing more than a bastard, a far cry from Evelyn, who is openly embraced by the Kyte family. In contrast, he is forced to lurk in the shadows, an embarrassment to the Doyle family.
"Luke, Dermot isn't your enemy, and he's not to blame for your current situation," Evelyn said, her voice steady. "If I were you, I'd focus on making myself stronger rather than obsessing over a return to the Doyle family."
"Just because your last name is Doyle, does that mean you're destined to be chained to them for life? Why? Can't you make your own mark with your abilities?"
Evelyn believed that if Luke didn't waste his talent on dubious schemes, he could achieve something significant on his own.
Luke remained silent, prompting Evelyn to continue, "The issues of the previous generation have nothing to do with you. You can choose the life you want."
"But why does he, also a Doyle, get to have everything I want?" Luke said resentfully.
The Doyle Group might not be much in Columbia, but in Moris City, they were a force to be reckoned with. Luke felt that on his own, he might never reach such heights.
"Dermot worked hard for all he has. When Benjamin suddenly vanished, the group was headless. Imagine how young he was when he had to take charge of the company alone. It wasn't as easy as you think," Evelyn explained, and though Dermot had never shared this with her, she could sympathize.
Luke's resentment lingered as Evelyn pressed on, "Over the years, haven't you had many things he never did?"
"Like what?" Luke asked, not understanding.
"At the very least, you grew up with your parents by your side, loving and caring for you. But what about Dermot? When it comes down to it, he has more reason to resent you, don't you think?" Evelyn's heart ached for Dermot, unable to imagine how he survived those parentless years.
Her words touched Luke slightly, stirring a sense of agreement within him.
After a pause, he scoffed, "All this talk, and you still just want me to work for you."
"Yes, I won't deny that," Evelyn Marina said, acknowledging his point. "You have talent, and I want you at the company. It's not a bad deal for you."
"Not a bad deal? I could walk away and get hired by any major firm out there. They wouldn't refuse me," he retorted with disdain, wondering how she could make such a proposition with a straight face.
Chin resting in hand, Evelyn flashed him a playful wink. "Remember when you first started, and I asked you why you wanted to join Evelyna Fashion? Your answer still stands out to me even now."
Luke was momentarily stunned. What had he said again?
"You said that at a big corporation, you wouldn't feel any sense of achievement. You'd be just a cog in the machine. But here, at Evelyna Fashion, you could really make an impact, help a small company grow and perhaps even rival the top families of Columbia. Isn't that a much more satisfying goal?"
Seeing her earnest expression, Luke was momentarily lost for words.
After a long pause, he chuckled resignedly, "Rivaling the top families of Columbia? That's some ambition you've got."
"Of course," Evelyn retorted confidently, her gaze unwavering. "I believe in myself. The question is, do you believe in yourself?" Their eyes locked and Luke felt a momentary daze.
