Chapter 1123: Do You Really Think I'm an Idiot
Joshua didn't really give it much thought. He had Mary stick around, not 'cause he wanted her to buddy up with Evelyn, but just to keep tabs on her.
Joshua gave her the once-over, like he didn't buy what she was selling.
Catching his vibe, Mary shot back, "Joshua, you seriously think I got rid of her? That I'd help her out?"
Everyone figured Mary wouldn't lift a finger for Evelyn.
But who would've guessed that by booting Evelyn, Mary was actually looking out for numero uno?
"Get someone to comb the whole island, pronto," Joshua barked. He knew there was a good shot Evelyn wasn't even there.
But he couldn't just throw in the towel.
That night, even with Brandon leading a full-on search party, Evelyn was nowhere to be found. It was like she just poofed into thin air.
Listening to Brandon's report, Joshua stayed mum, his face like stone. "Call it off. She's not here."
Even though he kinda knew it before, hearing it still made him uneasy.
Did she really have to bail?
"Mr. Garcia, no way. There's only two ways off this rock. How'd she split?" Brandon was stumped.
Joshua wasn't shocked. He shot a look at Mary and sneered, "There's gotta be a rat."
"A rat?" Brandon was freaked. "Damn it! I'll sniff out that rat, no matter what."
Mary stood there, a chill running down her spine, thinking Joshua was pointing the finger at her.
As she mulled over whether she was in the hot seat, a lackey walked in. "Mr. Garcia, the company got an email."
"Get lost!" Joshua snapped, too ticked off to deal with work stuff.
The lackey didn't budge and whispered, "It's from Evelyn."
The room went dead quiet, and Mary's eyes went wide.
From Evelyn? So she wasn't dead?
Before Mary could even guess what Evelyn sent, the guy pulled out his phone, scrolled to some pics, and handed it to Joshua.
There were two shots: one of a shipping label with Evelyn's name, and another of a check with Mary's name.
Joshua pieced it all together.
He turned to Mary. "After all these years working for me, you're still this dumb?"
Mary froze, feeling like whatever Evelyn sent was bad news. "Joshua, what are you getting at?"
"Did you give Evelyn a check?" Joshua asked.
Mary's knees almost gave out.
She thought, 'Evelyn, you snake! How dare you set me up!'
Without that check, even if Joshua had his doubts, he wouldn't have any proof. He'd probably let her slide because of her loyalty.
But now...
Mary bit her lip, feeling wronged. "Joshua, it's not what you think. Evelyn blackmailed me!"
"She blackmailed you, and you just handed over the cash?" Joshua sneered.
Mary scrambled to explain, "She made me find a way to get her off the island and demanded a check, or she'd kill me! I had no choice but to..."
"Enough!" Joshua cut her off, his face icy. "You think I'm a fool?"
"Joshua."
"Get out. From now on, I don't wanna see you on Castle Island," Joshua said, turning his back, done talking to her.
