Chapter 502 Utterly Unacceptable
Evelyn had her schemes, and knowing this only added to Dermot's dilemma.
"You do realize Craig is my friend," he said, emphasizing the depth of their bond.
Evelyn nodded, still smiling at him. "So, are you going to tell Craig?"
Their eyes locked—an eternal moment with Evelyn wearing a smile and Dermot a grave expression. Time seemed to drift until finally, Dermot broke into a reluctant smile. "No, I won't."
The corners of Evelyn's mouth lifted. "I knew it. You're not one to be unfair. It's obvious Craig is the one in the wrong here."
"Actually… you might have the wrong idea about him. Ruby’s not as miserable with him as you think.” Dermot had seen enough to believe Ruby could hold her own, and neither seemed to get the better of the other.
Evelyn dismissed that line of thought. “If he truly cared for Ruby, he'd court her earnestly, giving her a fair choice, not keeping her trapped by his wealth and power.”
For Ruby, there was no real choice but to agree with Craig, or the Kite family would face ruin. That was something Evelyn could never stand by and accept.
"You've got a point," Dermot conceded. Nobody likes feeling trapped.
"When do you plan on getting the Kite family to Columbia?" Dermot inquired, mulling over whether to clue Craig in or maybe get him busy with something else for a while, to avoid any direct confrontation with Evelyn.
Evelyn considered for a moment, her eyes drifting towards the ongoing renovations. "Soon. Once things are settled here in Columbia, I'll head back to Moris City and bring them over."
"Mhm." Dermot didn't press further. Evelyn had made up her mind, and anything he added would be superfluous.
Leaving the office building, Dermot took Evelyn for lunch at a rooftop restaurant. As they sat and looked down upon the bustling streets below, a wave of contemplation washed over her.
The city was bustling, a glittering web of opportunities and challenges. She couldn't help but wonder if she had what it took to make her mark there.
Dermot had his own priorities, not entirely different from hers – but instead of searching for a firm foothold, he was bent on gaining strength. His goal was simple: bolster Evelyn's standing within the Kyte family so that no one would dare cross her.
Dinner that night was a strained affair, with their divergent thoughts simmering beneath the surface.
Elsewhere, as soon as Blake transferred ownership of two companies to Evelyn, the news began to circulate.
The shareholders in the Kyte family had their reservations but remained silent. After all, it was under Blake's helm that the Kyte Group had flourished. Besides, those two businesses were small fry; no one wanted to ruffle Blake’s feathers over them.
Dora, on the other hand, was a different story.
Blake hadn’t kept the transfer a secret, and Dora couldn't ignore the sudden appearance of this new player with the Kyte surname. The rumor mill kicked into overdrive, with everyone's imagination running wild.
Calls started pouring in non-stop, people probing the nature of Evelyn and Blake's relationship. Even Lucia received inquiries, leaving her puzzled.
Could it be that Evelyn really had ties to her father?
The thought scared Lucia. How could she, who despised Evelyn so much, be related to her own father? No, it was unacceptable.
When Dora confronted Blake, he had just wrapped up a meeting and didn't show any surprise at her appearance: "What do you want?"
"You really need to ask? What’re you up to? Are you seriously planning on bringing Evelyn back into the fold?" She was fuming, yet she kept her anger in check.
Blake met her gaze coolly, not addressing her questions. Instead, he countered, "I should be asking you that. You've known Evelyn is my daughter for ages and yet you dare put her life at risk. Do you really think I'm afraid of you, Dora?"
