Chapter 508 If You Provoke Me...
Evelyn was slightly taken aback. Lucia was turning out to be more astute than Evelyn had anticipated. Evelyn had almost expected her to be a constant adversary, but this change of tactic posed no real threat.
Yet, Lucia's ability to bide her time meant she might not be so easy to deal with after all.
What a nuisance, Evelyn thought to herself.
If Lucia hadn't gone out of her way to bother her, Evelyn might not have even considered dealing with the Kyte family. However, given that Lucia had stirred trouble, and Dora had even sent someone to take her out, there was no way Evelyn could let it slide.
Clearly, she was not one to be trifled with.
Blake noticed that Evelyn remained silent and appeared to be reluctant. "Go if you want to”, he said, “no need to take Evelyn with you. I'll look after her myself."
"Dad, aren't you usually swamped at these dinners, with hardly any time..."
"Nothing and no one is more important than Evelyn," Blake interrupted.
Jealousy surged within Lucia. She just couldn't fathom why, being daughters of the same father, they were treated worlds apart.
Hearing this, Evelyn finally looked up at Blake and said, "It's not necessary. You have your things to attend to; my sister can accompany me."
At the word 'sister', Lucia felt a shiver run down her spine, her skin crawling with discomfort.
"Alright then, don't be afraid of her. If she dares to bully you, just tell me," Blake cautioned, clearly doubting Lucia's good intentions.
Lucia forced a laugh, her bravado barely hiding her discomfort. "Dad, why on earth would I bully Evelyn? It was all just a misunderstanding."
Blake didn't respond but started serving Evelyn her favorite dishes, ignoring Lucia entirely.
Throughout the meal, while Blake and Evelyn enjoyed themselves, the other two were the polar opposite of happy.
After dinner, as Evelyn was to stay with the Kite family, Blake had the staff prepare a room for her. Although it was ready, he personally led Evelyn there.
"I wasn't sure about your tastes, so I just arranged something basic. If you don't like it, we can have it changed," Blake said.
The room's minimalist decoration didn't bother Evelyn at all, as she wasn't planning to stay long anyway. "It's fine, thank you for going to the trouble."
"Evelyn, I'm your father. You don't have to be so formal with me," Blake said, feeling a pang of sorrow. He could sense that Evelyn had not truly accepted him as her father.
Evelyn didn't deny it but replied, "After so many years of absence, you have to give me some time, right?"
"Of course, I'm not in a rush." Blake could wait as long as Evelyn wasn't outright rejecting him. His real fear was her not giving him any chance at all.
After settling in, Evelyn went downstairs to explore.
The Kite family estate was expansive, with gardens and a pool among its many luxuries. Evelyn thought a post-dinner stroll would be lovely.
"You must be feeling pretty smug, huh?" Lucia's voice came from behind her, full of bitterness from the shadows.
Evelyn turned to face her. "Not really. There's nothing to be smug about," she replied coolly.
Indeed, to Evelyn, temporarily getting the better of Lucia wasn't something to gloat about.
" I can't fathom how you have the nerve to show your face around the Kyte family. Regardless of whatever relationship your mom had with my dad, they never married. You're a bastard. Doesn't that embarrass you?" Lucia tried to detect a hint of panic or shame on Evelyn's face as she confronted her.
But there was none. Evelyn just smiled—annoyingly so.
Admiring the flowers, Evelyn spoke calmly, "I'm not all that clear or concerned about the past generation's affairs. Frankly, I couldn't care less about returning to the Kyte family. If it weren't for Dora unnecessarily sending someone to Moris City to take my life, I wouldn't bother coming here."
"As for myself, I've always believed in living peaceably as long as no one bothers me. But if someone dares to start trouble with me, then I..."
"Clearly, I can't let them have their way!" Evelyn concluded.
