Chapter 1232: Give Him Some More Time
Ruby shoved Evelyn back into the ward, practically wrestling her onto the bed. "Man, I'm beat."
"Thanks, Ruby," Evelyn mumbled, feeling a bit awkward.
"Now you get it. When you asked for help earlier, you didn't seem to care about how much effort it took," Ruby shot back, a little ticked off.
Evelyn laughed, knowing Ruby wasn't really mad. "So, how's it going with Alex? Haven't seen you in ages."
Ever since Ruby and Alex hooked up at Sarah and Keith's wedding, alone time had been scarce.
Now that she thought about it, months had flown by.
Summer was already here.
"It's nuts! I had no clue how crazy police work was until I started dating Alex," Ruby griped. "You wouldn't believe the lack of real vacations. And even when he's off, his phone's like an extra limb. We've had so many dates cut short, I've lost count." Frustration oozed from her words.
Evelyn got it. Being a doctor wasn't much different. "Some jobs just demand that kind of sacrifice. You gotta cut him some slack."
"I know. If I didn't, we'd be done by now," Ruby sighed, feeling a bit bummed. She just wanted a normal relationship.
Her last thing with Craig was a disaster, and now with Alex, normal seemed out of reach too.
Evelyn saw the frustration in her eyes. "Give him some time. He'll figure it out. Plus, Alex is super capable. Once he gets promoted, he'll have more time for you."
Ruby sighed again. She knew Evelyn was right. She was just feeling down and didn't really want to dump Alex.
"He's been out of town these past few days, chasing bad guys. If he were here, he'd help you out," Ruby said.
Evelyn grabbed Ruby's hand. "Don't be upset. I'm here for you."
"You?" Ruby scoffed. "You've been all over Dermot lately. Do you even have time for me?"
"Come on, just call, and I'll be there," Evelyn promised.
Ruby was skeptical but kept quiet. She felt a bit better.
That night, Ruby and Evelyn chatted until they dozed off in the wee hours.
The next day, Evelyn got word that Dermot's condition had stabilized, and he was moved to a regular ward. She immediately asked Ruby to wheel her over.
After a night's rest, Evelyn could barely get out of bed on her own, so Ruby agreed.
In Dermot's ward, Todd was looking after him. When he saw Evelyn, he stepped out.
Ruby pushed Evelyn to Dermot's bedside and then left the room, giving them some privacy.
After such a big scare, Evelyn had a lot to say to Dermot.
But Dermot was still out cold, and no matter what she said, he couldn't hear her.
Evelyn didn't care. Her eyes locked onto Dermot's face, and tears welled up. "Dermot, you idiot! Why'd you go and risk yourself for me?"
She would've preferred if Dermot hadn't protected her. She'd rather be the one in a coma.
