Within the sterile walls of the hospital, Evelyn finalized her resignation, stepping out of the director's office with a sense of finality.
Her colleagues, Marina and the others, watched her with visible reluctance. Evelyn, however, greeted them with a warm smile. "I'll treat everyone to dinner tonight, make sure to come," she offered.
Marina nodded, her agreement echoed by the rest. "Of course, we'll be there." Their bond with Evelyn wasn't as deep as Marina's, but they were still colleagues. Moreover, with Evelyn's departure, they were faced with the daunting prospect of their neurosurgery department returning to its less illustrious days.
Once the others had dispersed, Marina took Evelyn's arm, concern etched on her face. "Eve, are you really leaving? Won't you reconsider?"
Evelyn shook her head. "No, I won't," she replied firmly. "I've got a lot on my plate in Columbia and can't keep up with the hospital's demands. So, I have to move on."
Marina nodded, understanding. "That makes sense, especially now that you're a lady of the Kyte family," she added, having learned of Evelyn's status from the news. They had always felt distant from Evelyn, as if she were out of their league, and now that feeling was even more pronounced.
Evelyn shrugged off the comment. "That doesn't matter to me. I'm still me, and a change in status won't turn me into someone else." Her reasons for leaving had nothing to do with the Kyte family.
Marina believed her but couldn't shake off a sense of loss. "With you gone, the neurosurgery department is bound for a downturn. How could the director let you go so easily?"
Evelyn sighed. "It wasn't easy. If the hospital encounters tricky cases, I'll still have to return for surgeries," she explained. This was a condition of her departure—the director, realizing he couldn't stop her from leaving, resorted to a compromise.
Marina's face lit up. "Really? That's fantastic!"
Evelyn chuckled. "The director's a sly old fox. Without such an agreement, he wouldn't have let me leave." She had once been persuaded to stay in Moris City by his silver tongue. Now, on the brink of departure, she was relieved that her fears of being swayed once more were unfounded.
The director agreed readily, with only one condition regarding the collaboration. Evelyn didn't hesitate to accept. Healing the sick was her life's work. Even if she returned to Columbia, she'd likely continue practicing medicine. Establishing a partnership between the two hospitals meant doing surgeries back here wouldn't be a problem.
Marina found reason in her words and couldn't help but laugh.
Soon after, Marina got tied up with her own tasks, and Evelyn headed to her office to pack up her things. Although Evelyn hadn't been there long, leaving still tugged at her heartstrings.
Lost in thought, she was startled by a knock at the office door. Opening it, she was surprised to find several of her former patients waiting outside.
"Dr. Kyte, heard from the other doctors you're leaving?" one of them asked.
Evelyn nodded. "Yes, but I'll be coming back to perform surgeries from time to time. If you need anything, don't hesitate to visit the hospital."
One of the patients seemed upset. "Dr. Kyte, I never got the chance to thank you properly. I planned to do it after getting discharged, but now you're leaving."
Evelyn wasn't sure what to say, so she offered comforting words. "No thanks needed. I'm just doing my job. Don't worry so much, just take good care of your health. That's most important."
As she finished speaking, the group presented her with items they had prepared. "Dr. Kyte, we're just ordinary folks. We don't have any fancy gifts. These are local specialties from our hometowns as a token of our appreciation."
"I can't accept them, but thanks," she protested, yet inside, she felt a warm sense of fulfillment, realizing that her work had indeed paid off.
