Chapter 519 No way
"Do you like it?" Evelyn asked, approaching Dermot for his opinion.
Snapping back to reality, Dermot smiled and nodded affirmatively. "Beautiful, everything looks stunning on you."
Evelyn's cheeks flushed with a soft glow of embarrassment at the compliment – flustered by such open admiration.
"Sis, who's this?" Lucia chimed in, cutting off the conversation. She couldn’t bear to watch any longer, feeling this guy wasn’t worth Evelyn’s time.
Didn't he care that Evelyn had been married before?
Evelyn snapped back to reality, almost forgetting Lucia and the others were present. "You're very interested in the company I keep?"
Caught off guard, Lucia offered a forced laugh. "Come on, sis, I'm just looking out for you. Things are different for you now; you don't want to mix with the wrong crowd."
Although Dermot didn't look like trouble, Lucia couldn't shake her skepticism. How could Evelyn, a divorcee, possibly attract a decent man?
"If you don't have anything nice to say, keep it to yourself," Evelyn shot back, then turned to Dermot. "Ignore her."
Dermot Marina hadn’t paid much attention to Lucia from the start. Apart from Evelyn, no one else really made an impact on him.
Shortly after, Dermot pulled a diamond necklace from his bag. "Beautiful, but your neckline's looking a bit bare."
Without missing a beat, he draped the necklace over Evelyn. The enormity of the blue diamond set against her blue dress made a striking statement that caught everyone’ eye.
Lucia and company were stunned. How much did that blue diamond cost?
A pang of envy coursed through Lucia. Sure, the Kyte family was loaded, but she grew up with hardly any fancy jewelry; her father rarely gave her any. She had never minded before, but Evelyn’ presence now made it sting.
Lost in thought, Lucia was startled by an arrival. "What are you doing here?" she asked the family driver, who'd just walked in.
"Miss, Mr. Doyle sent me to deliver something to Lady Evelyn," he said, presenting her with a box.
Evelyn accepted and casually opened it to reveal a bracelet that, to her discerning eye, was unmistakably a top-grade precious stone. Priceless would not be an exaggeration.
Before Evelyn could react, Lucia burst out, "Her? Why does she get it?"
"How could Dad do this? That’ not fair! It can't be!"
Lucia’s emotional outburst left her friends speechless, uncertain how to comfort her. They too were shocked at Blake’ blatant favoritism. With Evelyn’ recent return gaining such affection, who knew what the future held?
They had hoped to cozy up to Lucia for future favors, but now it seemed their plans might fall through.
Evelyn tucked the bracelet away, facing Lucia. "And why not? Is Dad only allowed to give you gifts, and not me?"
She had no idea that Lucia hadn't received any valuable jewelry over the years and assumed that it was just envy that was driving her now.
"No way! I won't allow it!" Lucia bellowed, lunging to snatch the box from Evelyn's grasp.
It was meant for her, it had to be a mistake by her father, a definite mix-up!
However, snatching it from Evelyn wasn't the only problem—Dermot was there, and he would not let Lucia lay a finger on Evelyn.
He stepped in front of Evelyn, regarding Lucia with a cold indifference, "Miss Kyte, please conduct yourself with dignity. Don't force me to step in!"
